  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I'm curious what apps the golfers on here use. I've used GolfLogix (loved it, but won't pay yearly) and GolfShot for GPS, scoring and statistics. I love GolfShot. Great App that works well. I only have two minor critiques so far. First that they don't currently have shot tracking linked to statistics. In otherwords, you can track a shot to see how far it went, but it doesn't link to what club you hit so that you can keep track of your average distance or range of distances per club. This is something that GolfLogix did that I loved. I have been assured that this is on its way for GolfShot, so I'm anxiously awaiting that. My other gripe is a personal preference issue. I prefer drawings of holes to arial pictures. To me, using pictures ends up with cluttered views of the holes and many times depending on the shot it can be hard to really tell what you are looking at. I know there are reasons to use actual pictures, I just prefer the drawings. My very last possible gripe is that they indicate on their website that some improvmements along the way may not be free upgrades and they hint that the current pricing may switch to an annual fee basis in the future for new customers. But these are all gripes that have yet to happen, so for now I still give them a hearty .

Beyond that I've downloaded the Masters and US Open apps and they both helped me to watch some of the tournaments I wouldn't have otherwise seen. I've also downloaded Golfr for searching and researching golf courses. What I've been looking for is something like a checklist to keep track of courses I've played. I was hoping to find something that would allow me to check off courses on a list, but I haven't found anything like that. Not like I would ever get there, but I thought it would be fun to see how many of the courses in a given area I could play. Golfr's "favorite courses" option at least lets me keep track of all of the courses I've played. The information isn't the best (fees are not updated) and the interface is only so/so, but it's not a bad app for what it is.

Been using GolfLogix for almost a year now and really like it. I tried some free apps for the BlackBerry and found while somewhat effective they all had more downsides to them like a lack of features or just bad yardage info even. Golflogix is far superior to the ones I have tried and the $40 a year is not that much IMO. I haven't seen anything like what you are looking for that allows you to track the courses you've played.

I don't have a smart phone. I have verizon's LG. I have an app called GPS Golf Shots. It is super cheap but gives a fairly accurate distance. The only thing I don't like is you have to tell it what hole you are on every time you want a reading.

Here is the app. It is available for other phones: http://gpsgolfshot.com/

Yeah, I know the $39.99/year is reasonable, I just HATE paying an annual fee. Especially since my golf game has been extremely erratic over the years (as to whether or not I'm playing). I'm getting back into the game now that my Father moved to Florida and I can play with him on a fairly regular basis. But honestly, for the money, I just can't beat GolfShot. I do miss the ability to track distances for each club, but as soon as that comes out I won't be missing much from GolfLogix. But if you don't mind the annual fee, I can't knock GolfLogix. I thought it was a great app.

I can understand that, Part of the reason I paid for it because the I didn't want to buy a gps unit for golf. The free apps I tried had issues with many of the local courses not being listed and some were user mapped and were pretty vague with information and some just flat out had wrong markings. I used the 24 hour trial and 2 guys I played with that had gps units and I was surprised by how accurate it was for me so I was sold right there.

I'll have to give GolfShot a try as my yearly renewal is coming up

I recommend it. The only thing that is a problem, and I've recently emailed them suggesting they jump on this, is that their LITE version does not have any way for you to test out the GPS function. You have to pay for the app if you want to try it. Considering the fact that you can try other apps (GolfLogix and...shoot, another one I saw yesterday and can't remember now) either for 24 hours or for just a few holes on multiple courses. While it's a great app, I think they are losing customers because they can't try out the GPS function before buying.

I tried GolfShot on my iPhone with some success but just didn't like how slowly it updated the distances. I also didn't like how fast the battery got used up. I ended up just getting a Callaway uPro Go and haven't looked back. With the Go you just by the device and unless you want the Pro features you don't have to pay anything more.
