ok here goes...
the type of ball doesn't make a hill of beans to some people, 'cause they don't hit any two balls the same way...in that case, buy something realitively cheap and hit away. You probably won't keep the same ball more than a couple holes anyway. Titleist NXT is a good all around ball...
If you are any good at all, you already know what kind of ball works for you. I hit mainly Pro V1, and a couple of different Nike balls.
I'm with you Randy. "Relatively" inexpensive is ok for those new to golf. However, using ultra-cheap, low end golf balls gives you an automatic handicap on every single shot. Once you are even remotely consistent in ball striking, the difference you will feel is HUGE between a high quality ball and no-name junk. Decide if you are more comfortable the overall feel and performance of spin vs. distance balls. Those that promote spin will feel softer off the club face, though may exaggerate a heavy fade to a wicked slice. I also recommend that when you find a ball you really like and can afford, you stick with it. Switching balls every few holes will add a lot more variables than you might expect.
I also like Titleist Pro V1 (not V1x) and the discontinued Nike TS2 Spin. Nike One is an awesome ball, feels great when hit, but the ultra soft cover will drive me nuts. I like most of the high-end balls from these two companies. The Hogan Tour Deep is excellent as well. Wilson Px3, Precept Laddie, Maxfli Noodle (only Maxfli I like), and Callaway HX are all balls I would use.
To get a good price, look for blowouts of logo overruns on high-end balls, check out ebay for Mint condition experienced balls, and watch for closeouts.
