Looks like my 4 year old samsung DVD player doesn't want to play 80% of the DVDs I put in. Tried a cleaner disk but that didn't help.

So now I will embark on the task of finding a model which does what I want. (DivX/Xvid, region free)

Don't buy a progressive scan unless your TV supports it. I think I got that right :scratchhe

Amazon has the Philips DVP 642 on sale for $60, free shipping. Plays DivX, has a way to set it to region free if you google for the code. Has optical and coaxial digital sound output, progressive scan, plays DVD+RW (So I can burn DivX movies onto those!)

Cliff, most if not all progressive scan DVD players can turn off the progressive scan feature in setup so it can be used on older TV's.

Yeah I bought a couple of 3 packs for $20 to try them when they came out but they are too much for full time use.

I thought I saw a CompUSA ad that had a 10 pack for $20 (Verbatim) this weekend

I'm gonna have to check that out. . . my g/f just quit CompUSA and we still have a lot of friends up there so we could totally get the hook up!

I need to get one that plays divx. Would come in handy for all the TV shows that I download. I wouldn't have to watch them on the computer.

I got the Philips player a couple weeks ago. Plays divx and xvid files without a problem. Subtitles files are a bit tricky, some don't play. Picked up some DVD+RW discs for burning and reburning stuff to watch on the player.
