Decided while I was working on some projects on the deck to have myself a smoke. Also seemed like a perfect time to snap some pics and post a review. It was pretty warm out so I poked around for something I though would be more on the mild side and perhaps something that if I didn't finish it I wouldn't be too disappointed. Well this Gurkha had been sitting in my humi since February and every time I think about smoking it something else wins out. Will all the bad press Gurkha seems to get on here I figured I'd give it a whirl.
The Micro Batch cigars are a cool idea and are certainly a little different than your run of the mill production cigars. The VH-7 is a 6 x 50 box press vitola. It has a nice chocolate brown color, minimal veins, visible though tight seams. This cigars is packed pretty tight, there was no give when I gave it a pinch. Pre-light aroma is that of caramel, slightly sweet medium tobacco. The foot has a tasty looking marbling of tobaccos to it. The cap came off cleanly and the draw is great with a pleasant mild tobacco and nuttiness.
The cigar lit well, but after the initial 3-4 puffs I started having burn issues. The cigar kept wanting to go out, but after some work I managed to keep it going. Once past about the first 1/2 inch, it opened up and started producing a lot of smoke.
The flavors were nice: mild to medium tobacco, caramel, nuttiness, slight chocolate through the retrohale. The ash was nice and tight, with a bright white color.
The ash fell at about 1.5 to 2 inches in. After that I started getting a sweet grass flavor on the retrohale, almost a floral flavor. Unfortunately after this the ash also started to be really flaky.
Unfortunately after the pic above the cigar started wanting to go out again. I kept working at it, but after a while it just wasn't worth it so I called it quits.
Smoking time ~ 1.5 hrs, but was cut short by burn issues. Overall it was an okay smoke, it may have been a much nicer smoke had I not had such difficulties getting the blasted thing to burn. My humi has been rock steady at 65% for several months now (beads rock :thumbsup
and I've had other cigars without any burn issues like this. Perhaps I should have dry boxed it, but I really think it was packed to tight. The flavors were nice, I've not had a caramel flavor in any of the cigars I've smoked thus far. Would I smoke another? Yes, but there are other cigars on my list so I probably wouldn't intentionally buy one (a quick thanks to L8A for bombing me with this stick all those months ago when I was first starting out on BOTL).
