FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP An estimated $75,000 in items was stolen in a "smash-and-grab" theft Tuesday at a Freehold Raceway Mall jewelry store, according to township police.Two males wearing hooded sweat shirts entered Reeds Jewelers about 1:20 p.m., smashed a showcase and swept the jewelry in it into bags, police said. The two left the mall and fled in a motor vehicle stolen about 10 minutes earlier from the mall parking lot, police said.
The two were described as black males with thin to medium builds and about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall, police said. Police said there was no further description of the two.
A third person was driving the vehicle used to flee the scene, police said. Police had no description of this person.
Police asked anyone who witnessed the theft or anyone having other information on the incident to contact Detective William Peace. The telephone number for police headquarters is (732) 462-7908; Peace's extension is 3108.
Beside township police, also responding was the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office.
No information immediately was available on whether police believe this incident was connected to similar incidents that have happened in the area.
