  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Anyone do it? I'm thinking about trying to brew my own beer. I have been reading a little bit about it and it seems like it would be fun to do.

Does anyone know of any good website to read up about it or names of a good book? Do you order from online stores, if so who do you recommend?

There is a beer & wine makers supplier right by my work. I stopped in today and they were very friendly and happy to help.

I really looked into it a few months back and talked to a shop in Ann Arbor who does dabble in it and they turned me onto Home Brewers Outpost. Homebrewers.com...They seem to have pretty much everything that you would need for a small operation...I think this winter I am also gunna give it a try. This summer has just been too busy! Let us know if you end up doing it and how it turns out!

I've been homebrewing for the past year with my old man. Check out Home Brew Talk - it's a really friendly forum, and they have lots of info. The best book to get into things is [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Homebrewing-Third-Harperresource-Book/dp/0060531053/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1251418912&sr=8-4"]The Complete Joy of Homebrewing[/ame] by Charlie Papazian.

If you can make Mac n' Cheese, you can make terrific beer. I'd get to know the people at the nearest homebrew supply store, and get them to recommend a kit for your first batch. Good luck!

Jump in the wort is fine!!

I've been home brewing for about three years now, its great fun. Not only can you make any style of beer you can think of, but it doesn't get any fresher!

I have a homebrew store (Keystone Homebrewing) close to me and I get allot of my stuff there but, I've also bought some equipment and kits from Mid West Homebrewing Supplies, they have a good selection of beer kits and equipment. They have a website just google it.

For books your can't go wrong with the Joy's of Homebrewing, its a good book to get you started and allot of the big chain book stores carry it in the food section.

The one piece of advice I will pass along is allot of the books will tell you to use regualr bleech as a sanitizer. It works but you need to rinse out your equipment with hot water to make sure all the bleech is gone. Buy San Star sanitizer, its a food grade sanitizer that has a low contact time and doesn't need rinseing.

Hope you give it a try, if you do let us know how your first batch comes out!

I started home brewing about 4 years ago and I bought a starter kit from http://www.midwestsupplies.com/ based in MN. Two years ago I found a nice place twenty minutes from where I live to buy my supplies now. The guy started his own brewery 2 years ago right next door.

I really enjoy this and the only thing I would recommend is using glass carboys as the plastic bucks can be easily scratched and bacteria can hide there and mess with your brewing process.

Thanks for the info guys. I picked up a couple books and going to visit a couple stores. After some reading and talking I will then decide if I want to give it a try.

My brother in law does this and he has made some damn fine beer.

Which means... if he can do it anyone can!

Good luck!

I'm also thinking about getting into home brewing. I was looking at this kit and probably a turkey fryer. Any thoughts?

The one on 309?

Home-brewing is definitely worth dropping the cash to get started. After the first few batches it's smooth sailing.

I have an Irish Red Ale in the carboy now, and just recently bottle my 'Roe VS Wheat' morning after ale and my buddy's recipe, 'Impaler IPA'.

Haha! If you're getting a propane burner/XL pot outdoor turkey fryer, YOU CAN USE IT TO HOMEBREW! Those kits are perfect for making the wort outdoors, and if you can't smoke cigars in your kitchen it's the way to go!

Dude I have a turkey fryer and I already plan on doing some all grain brewing in the spring. For the winter though I'll be doing extract/partial mash brews.

Oh most definitely. The thought of standing around in my kitchen for a couple hours is not that appealing. Now, the garage is a different story. I was actually getting the turkey fryer FOR brewing. Eventually I may fry a turkey, but not till I run a few batches of brew through it first.

And the most fun part of home brew is having to drink half a case just to figure out what cigar it best pairs with.
