  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Home improvement/moulding gurus - Can I hang my bicycle from this?

I live in an old semi-ratty apartment. Between my bedroom (originally was the dining room) and my roommate's room (originally was the family room) is a sliding double door that has been sealed up as a permanent divider between the rooms. I store my bicycle in my room for security reasons and I want to know if the molding around this old sliding door is sturdy enough to hang my bicycle from with a big screw-in hook.

Pictures of the moulding are attached. The red dots indicate where I'm contemplating mounting the hook, either a horizontal hook or a vertical drop hook. Which ever is stronger works for me. The weird shot with no red dots is the view from the top looking down at the molding.

Any input is appreciated.

Jacob

I worry about screwing large hook bolts into the moulding. If you dont hit the door frame the only thing holding the bike/moulding on the wall would be a couple of nails for that will likely pull out.

Another way to hang the bike would be against the wall if you can find two studs to mount the hook anchors into, which probably be more secure than the moulding.

I ran a quick Yahoo! search and found this and thought it may be another alternative.

Hope all of this helps....

Hmm. Any idea how I can tell where the header is or how deep it is under the moulding?

That bike rack is nice, but I want my bike to lay against the wall rather than stick out. I don't have the real estate for the latter.

Sorry it took me a while to see your last post. In terms of the header, on the overhead picture I think from what I can see the header is the piece is closest to the wall ( I marked it on the attached picture). You may want to try two hooks to divide up the weight which may help with how well it stays in. One thing that I didnt notice until today is that if you run the anchors through the header you may not be able to open the doors completely since the hardware on the sliding doors is on top. Hope that all of my banter helps out somehow......:agreesmil
