  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Okay guys here's what I did. I took a pound of bacon and cooked it on some grates in the oven until delightfully crispy. Then I crumbled the bacon into a large mason jar. I then poured a 750ml bottle of vodka into the mason jar. Left it alone for about two weeks occasionally shaking. At the end I filtered through my coffee filter to remove the fat and bacon. Then I froze it and filtered it again. Also as a side note I did add some rough fresh ground pepper to the jar for additional character.

Now the crazy part. I was in the middle of drinking one of my 14% homebrew stouts. I got the crazy idea to add some of the bacon vodka to my beer. Holy hell is it delicious. If you guys have stout in your house and like bacon I highly suggest the combo. It's crazy good!

Being a bartender I have had bacon vodka before. A mad scientist buddy of mine made it and let me tell you, it's awesome. Kudos for your creativity. Excellent stuff for making Bloody Marys!!! Garnish with some blue cheese stuffed olives and you will be in bloody heaven. Nice to see some serious mixology on the site. Keep up the good work!

I have to admit, at first glance I thought OMG, WTF..??? but after reading the entire post, I can see the vodka being good in a stout. I'll have to try it out.

This is the start of a long downward spiral for a few of our members, namely Adam and perhaps a few others daring enough to try this... Like my self... Really though, thank you for sharing this, I can't wait to try it!

I used a potato vodka Luksusowa. I find it to have great flavor and it's not top shelf. So I feel fine using it for things like this and still end up with a great tasting end product.

As for grates I used like a broil grate or something set in a broiling pan. I don't know what they're actually called but something small enough that allows fat to drip off the bacon.

I have read more ways to do this and some suggest pan frying and just using the fat, some use both the bacon and the fat. Either way you'll be filtering it.

As for storage while the bacon was in the vodka I just kept it on the shelf. What's going to grow in vodka after all? Post filtering I just keep it in the liquor cabinet. It has a Jose Cuervo tint to it so I know I won't confuse it with other things. I don't have Jose in my cabinet.

Yep, it was the "what's going to grow" thing that I was thinking of. I guess the Vodka would do the job of preserving the bacon and keeping any nasties from growing.
