• BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

How do you determine what to buy?

While rummaging through my cigars today in order to send a sampler out, it hit me that about 90% of my NC collection is based on cigars I bought after someone here had sent me one to try. Ranging from RP, Padron, Torano, Fuente, etc...

Do you base your buys on what someone has sent you and you enjoyed or do you often buy cigars you have never tried?

I am basically talking five packs or more when purchasing.

If a review or someone says something is good I might pick up a single. Sampler packs are also nice.

If I like one brand I might try their other cigars. Certain makers don't release cigars that are bad, though you might not be crazy enough about them all to buy more.

I buy depending on if i have tried one that someone sent me and i like, or its a brand i like and have heard good things, if someone here said it was good, or if an opportunity arises here to split something i havent tried ill do that also.

There are a few people I find that have similar tastes as mine, I often order what they suggest. Sometimes I'll order if there's a good special, and other times I get adventurous and just order something unique, something I've never tried or something never suggested by someone else. Also, if there is a good buzz about a particular cigar I'm often inclined to grab a fiver.

Oh, and if someone sends me some cigars to try, I often find something I like and will order more. Make a wish threads are great for this

If I hear something good about a cigar here I will usually check it out. I check out reviews online as well. If the cigar isn't too pricey and looks interesting then I will pick one up to check it out. And of course, free cigars always taste better!

I'll try 'em based on reviews I read, recommendations I see, or when folks I trust tell me they're worth the time and money. I'm huge on deals, so I buy a lot of samplers that way.

I go on a couple of things now days. One the brothers I have traded with and we seem to have simular taste likes and dislikes I would buy some. Two some sales are just too good to pass up sometimes. Third, if I try one cigar that I really like I would buy a box and hope the rest are of the same as the one I tried.

Purchase fivers on recommendations and boxes by taste. Multiple boxes of one brand may not be wise since taste often changes.

I purchase boxes mostly and sometimes they're a blind purchase. I'm quite an impulsive person. Plus I will admit I'm a sucker for the marketing tactics of "limited release" type stuff. A lot of times though I go on manufacturer reputation and what I read about the cigars. I don't do much research, but I know I like medium and full smokes. Plus I like just trying new things. A five pack would be more economical but if I like the box I saved money buying 20 of them instead of just 5. Plus like others have said if someone sent me a stick and I liked it I'll pick up a box. Might as well buy up now before we're all paying $300+ for a $200 box of cigars.

i'm a sucker for hype. if people are raving about a cigar, especially botls that i respect i usually buy a sampler and make my own determination. if i deem them boxworthy i buy a box or two. this has been going on for years now lol...

About 80% of the time i'm buying something i know i like because either someone has given me and i've tried and liked or because i've gotten them myself and tried and liked them, so i buy more. 15% of the time i buy based on others reviews or the fact that it's coming from a maker i know to be good almost all the time (Pepin). The other 5% are b&m purchases of stuff i hvaen't tried but have wanted to based on hype or packaging.

I like fivers from other BOTL's and Holts. I lean toward specific blends. These I will buy boxes of to try. The Big Smoke is always fund to try a wide variety. Like Rob I have found certan people on this site have very similar tastes and if they like something, I will try it.

I never buy 5-ers --- the costs of shipping make them too uneconomical, IMO. I buy boxes or bundles or samplers of at least 15 sticks on line and singles at the b&m. How I decide what to buy is all over the map, sort of a combination of what everybody else has said: buzz on the 'net, what people give/send me, what strikes my fancy, even advertising!
