I received this in a bomb sent by jfsjazz last month. After my lunch I wanted to sit outside on the back deck to enjoy the excellent weather (sunny + 63F), so I went to grab a cigar. This Hoyo, with it's nicely yellowed cellophane wrapper just seemed to call to me ...
Size: 6 1/8" x 50 toro
Wrapper: CT Shade
Binder: CT broadleaf
Filler: DR / Hon / Nic
Price: Around $4
This was a brand I enjoyed long ago but they sort of fell out of favor for some reason. I'm really glad I picked this one up today as it brought back some good memories.
Pre-Light: Good looking tan wrapper with some small/medium veins. It's not very solid, with noticable softness which concerened me a bit. Still it didn't look underfilled. The aroma is a nice woodsy tobacco.
First 1/3: It lit evenly and the draw was smooth and easy, providing plenty of thick, creamy smoke. The flavors for the first inch or so are very leathery. In fact, it's almost like chewing on an old baseball mit. The aftertaste is long and slightly creamy with a bit of spice. After about 10-15 min, the leather starts being overshadowed by a dry roast coffee flavor. The burn is mostly even with a solid ash. It's about a mild-medium body + strength.
Second 1/3: The draw and burn are still very good. The body has picked up a notch to a solid medium, while the strength is still in the mild-medium range. The flavors are mostly roasted coffee, nuts, leather and hints of cocoa. The creaminess on the finish continues along with some sweet spices.
Final 1/3: Draw is fine, but I had to touch up one side to keep the burn even. The body is still a solid medium. Flavors are a mix of creamy coffee, cocoa, carmel, and tobacco. The finish continues to be fairly long with just a touch of spice. I smoked this down to just over an inch left. The smoke was still cool, but it was getting too soggy. Total smoke time = approx 80 min.
Overall this was a very nice cigar, perfect for early afternoon.
