  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Humi with Too Tight a Seal

The seal on a new humidor I bought is so tight that I have to push the lid down to close the lid. It stops with about 1/4" gap. Testing all around the rim with a dollar bill shows that the seal is tight everywhere.

I don't think this humi will have any problem holding humidity. But from what I know, along with doing this it also works best when it allows some air circulation in from outside. Is this a problem?

Also, would this humi benefit from some sort of waxing such that it would close properly with the proverbial "whoosh?"

If it needs some work that is likely to be successful, I'd like to keep it as I got a fabulous deal, a Savoy XL Macassar for $148.00.

Not an expert on this subject but two things that come to mind right off the bat. 1) Did you over season the humidor before you started using it. When wood has too much moisture it swells. Just a thought. 2) As far as air circulation, every time you open and close it, it will transfer air. Kind of like using a tupperdore. One more thing. If the humidor is over seasoned it can transfer excessive humidity to your cigars. Maybe you could post a few pics.

Agreed, over seasoned will definitely make the wood swell and the lid hard to close. For air exchange, that happened naturally through (as said above) the opening and closing of the lid and the porosity of the wood itself. The lid should not be allowing air to pass in and out while closed.

If it's not from over seasoning, my personal suggestion to fix the issue is some high grit sand paper and some light sanding on the lips of the cedar edges that make the seal. Making sure to keep the router edge as original in shape as possible. Or if you don't feel confident doing this, send it back.
