  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

This is quoted from the operating instructions of the new digital hygrometers that I received today. I found the last sentence to be particularly comical.

WARNING: This is an electronic instrument. To maintain the warranty of this product and enjoy many years of error free operation, do not attempt to perform the following; DO NOT wrap this gauge in a wet towel to test the accuracy. DO NOT attempt to perform the salt test. DO NOT submerge the gauge in water! DO NOT microwave or insert in an oven. Should anyone suggest any of the above to test the accuracy of the [brand name of hygrometer], we recommend that you run from them immediately!

I have a story that took place about 10 years ago. Back in the olden days, people just trusted the digital hygros because they were digital. As cigar boards became popular, info on the salt test was spreading pretty fast. A certain hygro manufacturer started getting a lot of complaints from the cigar board customers that his hygros were not accurate. A seller of the hygros even posted on a popular cigar board that the salt test would ruin a hygrometer. This was pure bullshit because the salt test is an accepted and widely used process to calibrate hygros in the scientific community. The retailer/wholesaler got his ass handed to him pretty good, and he disappeared from the cigar bords.

Now, I dont know if it has anything to do with your hygrometer, but it did bring back a fond memory.

the recalibratable that is sold by me and our other sponsors. I wouldnt even look at anything else.

also, why buy a hygrometer from a company who on thier packaging claims that the salt test is invalid? that would send up the GIANT red flag for me.

Not sure either, but all four that I bought are currently sitting in my room measuring the exact same temp and humidity (to the decimal) so I'm going to assume that they're accurate (or at least consistent).
