Just wondering: All I have is sea salt. Any difference with common table salt? Been calibrating hygros with that. Seems ok. Anyone with any experience otherwise?

BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE
Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

This! But sea salt is fine.
I just calibrated all of my hygro's using kosher salt and the two Xikars were dead on at 75%, the digital that came with my new humi was at 56%! This was the reason the readings in my new box were all over the place, so it went in the trash.

I tried calibrating 4 Xikar rectangular digitals all at once in a large ziploc with 4 beer bottle caps with table salt. my readings are inconsistent. I need to get a Boveda calibration kit I guess. Does the Calibration kit calibrate to 75%??
yes - the One Step Calibration kit calibrates to 75%. I use Xikar digital hygos, which allows me to reset to 70% once it stays in the kit bag for 48 hours.
I'm looking at a Humidipak calibration kit as I type this. I believe any small boveda and a sturdy ziplock (freezer weight) will work as long as the boveda is fresh (I believe that is all this kit is).
I would think even larger bovedas would work well in a larger (gallon) zip lock. In fact, it might work a bit better if you are trying to turn dials through the plastic, as this is pretty stiff and shows my attempts to do just that.

I just did the salt test on my hygrometer the other day. Didn't realize it was considered inaccurate. My reading was dead on at 75% after about 24 hours though.

Are you sure that is correct? The Xikar digital hygrometers that I have reset to 75% when you push the button.
There is zero difference between the salt test and the Boveda calibration kit as far as a humidity reading. Both generate 75% which is why digital hygros reset to 75% when you push the button. As far as doing the salt test, some people are unsure if they are doing it properly (mostly getting the right mix of salt and water) so the Boveda kit provides peace of mind. The Boveda is basically just a foolproof (and convenient) version of the salt test. There are also some sources that say that using the salt method can damage your digital hygrometer through corrosion. Personally I use the salt method but using one over the other really doesn't matter. Both generate 75% humidity so it all comes down to what you prefer and feel comfortable with.
As far as sea salt, table salt, kosher salt, etc. chemically they are all the same (sodium chloride) so using one or the other will not matter. All will produce 75% Humidity when in a saturated solution with water.
