This past weekend my wife and I were watching Disney's "Dumbo" with our two kids. My 6 year old son sees this character:

And asks, "Mommy, why do you smoke cigars?"
My wife replies, "I don't. Daddy does."
My son: "No, I mean why do people smoke them?"
My wife: "Ask daddy"

Me: {aw shit}

So I told him that I like the taste and... before I even got to the second point, he had stopped caring (and not even sure he was listening to begin with).

How many of you have had to deal with inquisitive children?

I just explained to my kids when they asked that there are all kinds of things that are 'bad' for us if not done in moderation and that my occasional cigar or two was no worse for me than a guy who has a couple beers after work or a big mac every now and again.

Much like the guns in my house, I talked to my daughter about my cigars before she ever asked about them. We talked about what they are, that they are for adults, that daddy smokes them with his friends.

She likes to watch me pack up bombs, and laughs when I tell her "We're going to blow up XXXXX mailbox." She says "daddy, cigars don't blow up mailboxes".

I like that (and agree with it). I was caught off-guard a bit so it was not my most eloquent reply but, then again, the 6 year old had stopped listening. With my photography, I used to do a lot of fine art figure studies and I am just waiting for him to stumble across that!

Cigars are probably easier to explain than the figure studies... :)
