  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I just got back from a weekend down in South Texas. I usually bring a few sticks wherever I go and this time was no exception. When I pack my sticks, cutter, lighter, etc. I usually place everything in this old Montesino wooden box for safe traveling. I got down south with no problem, but when I got home yesterday and unpacked I found a little note in my cigar box. The note explained that I cannot check lighters in my bag and that the item was confiscated. I called the airport only to find my lighter had been disposed of... I think this means someone saw a Xikar triple flame torch and wanted to take it home! Oh well, I guess take my loss as a lesson, don't pack torch lighters in your checked bag!:angerFU:

Damn, that sucks. But I don't think I would be carrying them on either. Go to walmart and get you a Ronson for $4, then if they take it you haven't lost much.

I was afraid of this myself and didn't carry a lighter on my trip last month. Turns out my father in law just left his lighter in his golf bag and they didn't bother it. Go figure.

Torch lighters must be carried in a Tranzpack Carrier (DOT approved) in checked luggage. They don't allow torches to be carried on.

Sorry to hear that, I just arrived in Hyderabad and check my luggage and all mine made the trip. I had a transpack, but I had 3 lighters in it plus I also brought along a small bottle of butane (which also made the trip).

Look at that! A $12 investment would have saved me $100.
From TSA's website, it looks like torch lighters aren't even allowed in Tranzpacks:

http://www.tsa.dhs.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm#9

According to the website I could lose the Tranzpacked torch, but I've been using it for a couple of years and I fly every week with no problem. Of course if they get it they are going to get a cheapie(zippo w/insert)..........I don't ever pack an expensive lighter.

Why was there a note? Was it carry on? Then you have to be present when they search your bag!! It it was check in, how did they find it? They don't screen bags that are checked in!!

Seems real jacked up to me!!!

They screen every bag that goes through the airport. Some airports make you drop your checked luggage off right by the machine and they put it through there. Other airports the machines are in the back or underground. Either way, your bag is being screened in some way shape or form.

Damn it!! people stop loosing nice lighters :widemouth
or just send the to me when you decide to fly:headroll:

My question is, how do they know it was a lighter versus a belt buckle or a knife in your checked baggage? I've been simply throwing my lighters in my bags for a while now. I guess I need to xray some of my stuff at work and see how it all looks, I may get a better idea of how to conceal them.

Ooh and TSA is a joke. :jitb:

I fly a lot, and my standard practice is to pack a $4 Ronson Jet-lite in the Otter Box case made for Zippos (fits perfectly) and to put a Bic in my carry-on. Both are permitted under TSA rules, and I carry a print-out of the latest regs from the TSA website in case there is a question. If I run into complete idiots screening both checked and carry-on bags, the worst I am out is $5.

Not to make you feel unsafe but if you ask me the TSA is basically a fun house with smoke machines and mirrors. On the bright side, a ton if people with high school diplomas or GEDs got decent jobs.
