Interesting taste

I smoked an Omar Ortez maduro last night for the first time and had an interesting / unexpected taste. First, I was surprised as hell to discover that the filler and wrapper are Nicaraguan, as there were no hints of spice or pepper to this cigar at all. Second, there was a hint of vanilla that was subdued at first but then started to open up a bit (nice, especially when the girlfriend indicated she liked the smell better than my other typical smokes).

The thing that caught my attention the most was that the smoke tasted chalky! It was almost like clapping out some erasers in school and walking through the resulting cloud. The wrapper also felt drier as if it had a slight feel of gymnastics chalk on it (damn i love ex gymnast girlfriends).

has anyone else experienced this at all?

i think so. some of the RP maduro wrapped cigars have had a chalky like taste to them. Not a fan of that though.

I think that was the first time I've tasted it. Every other maduro I've had has been quite oily and creamy. I really was shocked by this.

Yes, I've had that taste and is not really enjoyable......but do like the gymnast girlfriends.:thumbsup:

Cigarcylopedia had the filler as a blend of Nic and Panamanian. I don't think I've ever had Panamanian Tobacco before.

I have to say I was somewhat on notice of something being different pre-light since the gf reminded me that I had said "oh that's a color difference" as I was inspecting the cigar. I'm not used to seeing such a contrast between the filler and the wrapper (filler was significantly lighter).

Maybe it's a dyed wrapper. since we are adding RP maduros to the mix.

hmm, yeah...thats wierd...sounds like it was dyed...why would a company want to dye their wrappers???? ive heard more and more about this recently...but havent done much research into it.

Tobacco dye doesn't have flavor, so that's not what the "chalky" taste is coming from, if the cigar is even dyed (which is probably is, as a great many maduros these days are).

I too have found flavors like "chalky," "musty," "soapy," "paper," of of course "ammonia" in various cigars all all ranges of quality. All of them suck, lol, and if I get them 2 or 3 puffs in a row I always purge the cigar. Usually that takes care of it, if not ... time to pitch it.

Not sure I entirely agree with that. It's supposed to have no flavor, but there definitely is a chemicaly-ness (not ammonia) to some obviously dyed cigars.

Illusione has a chalky taste to me. But, I like that. I may have to give the Omar a try.

It may be a bit of Peruvian in the filler. I have always found that flavor in smokes I have known to have had that type of tobacco (and I don't care for the flavor).
