BoM August 2010/2011
Earlier in the year, I had heard rumors that Fuente would be releasing a new batch of 8-5-8 Sun Growns. I had asked a friend that works in a local B&M if he had heard anything. He hadn't, and even asked his Fuente rep, and was told no, there wouldn't be a 8-5-8 Sun Grown release this year.
Well, at Fuente's IPCPR booth, they had on display three boxes of Sun Growns: one box of 8-5-8, one box of Hemingway Classic, and one box of Hemingway Signature. For a retailer, to be able to buy a box of each of the new Sun Growns, they would need to place an order for 20 boxes of Fuente product.
Unfortunately, they were not handing out samples of any Fuente products. However, now that they have started shipping, I was able to obtain one for review.
The 8-5-8 Sun Grown is covered with an Ecuadorian Sun Grown wrapper, and has Dominican binder and filler. The wrapper is an oily dark brown, and has a couple of noticeable veins. Pre-light, the 8-5-8 SG has a light coffee and cocoa flavor.
The first third of the cigar had flavors of roasted coffee, light cocoa and subtle pepper. It was just enough pepper to create a tingle on the tongue. There was also a sweetness present, hard to say, but I was getting a little brown sugar taste.
Leather was the main flavor coming from the second third. There were also notes of coffee and cedar mixed within.
The final third of the cigar has cedar and leather flavors, mixed with a bit of cocoa.
The burn on the 8-5-8 Sun Grown was not completely straight. A few touch-ups were required. The ash was light gray, and was flaky. Overall burn time was 1:50.
I thought that the new 8-5-8 Sun Grown was a good cigar. I had been lucky enough to receive an OR 8-5-8, and smoke it a couple of months back. That cigar was tremendous. I can only hope, that with some time, that the new 8-5-8's will come close to the originals. However, right now, they aren't at that level. I will definitely get some more of these (actually I already do have a couple more), and let them rest. I cannot wait to see how they progress.
