The newest offering from CAO is a maduro version of their La Traviata cigar. This cigar has the same binder and filler as the original La Traviata, but features a Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper. This cigar is one that I was waiting to try, but wasn't able to get a sample until near the end of the show. I didn't want to try smoking it on a burned out palate, so I let it wait...until now.
The CBL wrapper on the La Traviata maduro is dark, very oily, and has a few noticeable veins. The pre-light draw tastes of cocoa, with some slight pepper.
The first third of the cigar came out with a blast of cocoa and pepper, which turned into more of a coffee flavor mixed with cocoa and pepper on the back. There was a slight meatiness to the smoke as well.
The middle third of the La Traviata maduro was leathery, with roast coffee. There were hints of pepper and cocoa mixed in.
Leather was still a dominant flavor in the final third, but it was mixed with cedar. There were also hints of coffee in the background.
The cigar kept a fairly straight burn, producing a nice white ash, that held fairly well. Overall burn lasted about 85 minutes.
The La Traviata Maduro was a very good cigar. The initial blast of cocoa and pepper that calmed down within a half-inch or so makes me think this cigar needs some time to rest. That way, the flavors will have time to blend in with one another more. I cannot wait to try one again.
