I think that we are all familiar with Ernesto Perez-Carrillo's Inaugural Edition and Short Run cigars. Well, EPC's booth at IPCPR brought us two new cigars in the EPC family: the new regular production "Core" line and the Edicion Limitada. I will provide a review of the new "Core" line cigar here. I am not certain of the overall size of the cigar I had received, but I believe it is close to a toro format.
This cigar is covered in an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, and has a Nicaraguan binder. The filler is Nicaraguan and Dominican. It is a medium to full body smoke, and I believe there will be 6 sizes available. Price is supposed to be below $9.
Once again, my Palio went to work, cutting off a nice clean slice from the cap. The pre-light draw had a woody flavor, with a little spice. Upon lighting, the flavor was loaded with a pleasant woody flavor that had a creamy texture. There was some spiciness evident, with some hints of cashews.
The creaminess diminished, but was still there, in the second third. A little bit of cedar came about, while there was an increase in the spice.
The final third of this cigar brought back the creamy texture as in the first third. There was also some hints of nutmeg and spice. The cedar also had gotten stronger, but did not overwhelm.
Overall burn time was close to 2 hours...I was really able to slow play this one. The burn on this cigar was fairly straight throughout. If it wavered at all, it was able to catch up with no problem. The ash was a medium grey color, and was somewhat flaky.
The only issue I had is one that I have had with all EPCs and that is the band. When removing the band, the remnants of glue wants to hold onto the wrapper. I have had some Inaugurals that had the wrapper shred apart because of this. This one tore the wrapper a little, but it didn't affect the burn.
I was really impressed with this cigar. It has some similarities to the Short Run. What's great is that this is regular production!! I am looking forward to smoking this one again.
