Walking around with Aaron (gibbleguts) at IPCPR on Wednesday, and Craig (kurtdesign1) comes up to me, and says that we need to try the cigar he is smoking. The name of the brand is EloGio. Later that day we made our way to the booth. EloGio is a small cigar brand that is made in Esteli. Their master blender is Carlos Pereda Robaina, the grandson of Alejandro Robaina.
EloGio produces small runs of their two cigars: the Serie LSV (reviewed here) and the Serie Habano (which I tried at the show, and really enjoyed). For the review, I smoked the Robusto (5x50), but I had also smoked the Corona Extra (6x42), which was impressive.
The Serie LSV is a Nicaraguan puro covered with an oily oscuro Sungrown wrapper. It is a medium to full body cigar, while the Serie Habano is a medium body cigar. The construction is quite good, with a well formed triple-cap, but there were a couple of slightly noticeable veins.
The pre-light draw of the LSV was of clean tobacco, with some slight cedar. Upon lighting, the first third of the cigar had flavors of dry leaves and slight cedar. It was creamy, with spice and a subtle sweetness...almost like caramel.
The middle third of the cigar offered up a woody flavor, with notes of cedar. The smoke was creamy on the back-end, still had the subtle sweetness, but the spice started to ramp up.
The final third was primarily flavored with wood, like oak, and a pleasant level of spice on the tongue. There were also hints of cedar on the finish.
The burn on this cigar was practically a razor edge. The ash was solid and white to light grey in color. Overall burn time was 90 minutes.
I was very impressed with this cigar. Thanks to Craig for pointing them out to me. I will be on the look-out for them in the future. Luckily I know of at least one shop in the area that will be getting them.
