Going into IPCPR, I knew what to expect from most of the cigars being released by Pete Johnson. I had the fortunate opportunity to try many of them while at the My Father Cigars factory in Esteli earlier this Spring.
The Corona Gorda is quite possibly my favorite size cigar. And by Corona Gorda, I mean the actual 5 5/8 x 46 size cigar, not the "Corona Gorda" category as seemingly defined by Cigar Aficionado, which includes sizes up to 6x60. I won't bother going on a rant about that right now.
Take a brown label, make a Corona Gorda size (which is also new...called the 7th), wrap it in the popular Connecticut Broadleaf, and you get the Tatuaje 7th Reserva. Wrapped in an oily, dark brown, toothy wrapper, with minimal veins, the 7th Reserva has practically a flawless construction.
The pre-light draw has a light cocoa flavor, with a little pepper. The first third of the 7th Reserva is a well-balanced sweet cocoa, roast coffee and pepper. Enough pepper just to get a tingle on the tongue.
Going into the second third, the cigar takes on more of a coffee flavor mixed with cedar and pepper. Notes of cocoa mix within the back-end of the smoke.
Two-thirds of the way in, and look at the ash! The burn line is perfect, the ash is white and holds on very tight. (I could hold the cigar sideways and it wouldn't drop. It only dropped when I tried getting the band off.)
The final third of the cigar offers up a mix of leather, cedar and pepper. Hints of cocoa and coffee linger on the palate.
This cigar was even better that the ones I had off the shelves in Esteli. This cigar will be part of my regular rotation....and since it is a regular release, it will make it easier to keep it around! I think this is a great cigar right now, and can only imagine what it will be like with some time down.
Overall smoke time was just over 80 minutes.
