  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

After a long weekend of entertaining and multiple dogs over at the house, I decided to relax with a little JC Anejo. I'm coming down to the end of the bottle and thought I should get some more. Come to find out they don't make the stuff anymore. If anyone sees any in their travels, can you let me know, I can deal with individuals or directly with the stores if they ship either would work. I haven't seen any in the DC area but I'm still searching. Any info would be appreciated.

Also, if you see any of the Cabo Wabo Milenio. I know there have to be a few smaller shops that still have some of either or both. G1

BTW, the Anejo is not the big bottle with the red wax, its a brown bottle with a cork stopper.

They're both pretty old. The milenio as the name, came out in 2000-01. The JC Anejo, I didn't know, they stopped making it and phased it out sometime around 2004-5ish. I bought 2 bottles back around that time, only because my shop had a good deal on them if you bought 2. Though its been 5 or so years since they were phased out, I"m sure there has to be someplaces that have them on the shelves all dusty. G1

Funny because I'd have almost a full bottle if my wife, brother in law and his friend didn't "happen" across the bottle. They saw Jose Cuervo and thought it was just an easily obtainable bottle. I actually didn't know that they stopped making it till I started searching for it lol. G1

Cuervo is much better than Patron. You can't even compare the two. Cuervo beats Padron's stuff in every category IMHO. Cuervo even has stuff in barrels that is so exclusive that it makes Patron Platinum seem unremarkable (we are talking about 50-100 year old aged premium tequilas at their factory reserved for the family) Patron is just run of the mill "okay" tequila with good marketing. There isn't anything special about it. If you are looking for smooth with no taste then Patron is good, but there are almost hundreds of tequilas that beat Patron. I go to Mexico 2-3 times a year and live in a state awash with good tequila. There are so many good tequilas out there now that it is hard to understand why Patron keeps bring purchased.

Goalee 1, I go to Acapulco in June and if I come across any in my travels I will pick some up and PM you. I do have a recommendation. If you like tequila and cordials, I recommend trying Aguavero, it is a dessert tequila that is made with 100% blue agave and sweetened by the damiana flower used by the aztecs in Mexico. It is pretty good drink with cigars.

sheesh, had I known you were a Patron hating Cuervo rep I wouldve offered a much more insightful response....as I'm not a regular Tequila drinker....and Jose C. is largely to blame. I'm sure Cuervo has somegood stuff, but their regular Tequila (gold or whatever) is no where near many of the bottles I've purchased (and FYI Patron isn't one of em'). El Jimador is better than JC and that can be had for like $12/bottle in Mexico, and not too much more than that here I don't think.

I'll have to give that a shot. Regardless, sounds like a nice thing to have in the cabinet. Thanks for the other recommendations. Never tried Don Julio, Patron, is ok but IMO, lacking in the flavor dept all around. Its kind of like the Krystal of tequilas. Rock stars and celebrities started drinking the stuff and gave it notoriety. Not sure what Cuervo you had a bad experience with K, but when my wife makes her frozen margaritas (I know blasphemy but hey it works for summer), she uses Cuervo Gold which again imo is the best for something like that. You can use a higher grade for mixing but I dont' see the point if you're going to dilute it out with triple sec, lime or lemon juice etc.

Im actually going to check out some lesser visited shops this weekend to see if I have any luck. G1

Funny, I haven't had a bottle of >$75/bottle tequila that is much better then Patron or Don Julio and I've tried many many types, even have a spreadsheet that I rate them on. The only JC I'll buy is the Reserva de la Familia but it's extremely over priced.

My top 5:
Chinaco Resposado
Don Julio Blaco
El Tesoro Anejo
Corazon Blanco
Cabo Wabo Resposado

I prefer the Resposado variation w/ the Anejo on occasion, but I drink it straight, no rocks and a bottle barely lasts two weeks once opened. Summer wouldn't be the same w/o Tequila and cigars.

x2

Absolutely.

I've seen some outstanding recommendations in here...I can't remember the damn name of one of the rather impressive tequilas we had before I left...it's easy to spot - it has a glass cactus that is inside the bottle.

On another note, one of the funniest recommendations that has held true for many years -

GOOD tequila has a CORK. The rest of it goes in screw-top bottles
Found the pic -

Yeah, I should have clarified....as there's a few different "grades" of Tequila, as with any hard liquor for that matter. That which is for mixing, that for sipping, and that for shot taking (the latter 2 I prefer to keep in the same category of quality as I'm not 21 anymore..LOL).

Cuervo Gold (and several other Cuervo offerings for that matter) for either sipping or shot taking to me any longer = :barf:

Although for mixing a Margarita, absolutely can see that. Although I still prefer the El Jimador...as it's cheap and more versatile than JC, and can be used as either. I prefer it as a mixer, but it's a very good sippin'/shootin' Tequila...and especially for the $.

Damn....anybody else cravin' a Tequila shot w/ a Cerveza chaser?? :bottle:

Sorry KPP, I came off as a dick and I apologize. I owe you a beer and shot for that. Sorry again brother!
No need whatsoever for an apology brother....I was on my phone when I replied, and opted against using any smiley emoticons in my initial response to "lighten the mood" so to speak.

I take my booze and cigar smoking seriously, and certainly don't fault anyone else that does the same...LOL. Besides, just like w/ cigars, we all have our own preferences, and there are no right/wrong answers here.

My top 5:

1) Clase Azul - Usually only found in Mexico in a 3 foot long white and blue porcelain bottle. Aged for 3 years in sherry/port casks. The best I have ever tasted hands down. A legendary tequila in Mexico.
2) Cofradia Reposado - Around $5 a bottle and is f***ing incredible for the price. They also make the high priced Casa Noble.
3) Herradura Anejo - A classic, pure and simple.
4) Jose Cuervo Platino - I love how powerful the agave cactus flavor is in this tequila. The best blanco I have had.
5) Corralejo Reposado - Balanced and strong essences of agave. Almost every Mexican has a bottle of this shite.

Honorable Mention: Aguavero Tequila - 100% agave sweetened with the Damiana flower honey from the aztecs. Best after dinner drink if you love tequila.
