I am a huge fan of lanceros. I never miss an opportunity to try one no matter the brand or price.
In 2006 I was in a Miami B&M and I saw for the first time a Joya de Nicaragua lancero. I gave it a try and was really impressed with it. As soon as I got home I ordered a box. When I opened it up I was pleasantly knocked off my feet by the strong coffee and chocolate aromas.
After letting them sit in my coolerdor for about a month I eagerly fired one up. Much to my chagrin it was pretty much a bust. Very one dimensional and flat tasting. Several weeks later I tried another one and unfortunately with the same results. Definitely not what I remembered from my Miami smoke.
What a disappointment ... until now. After two years of blissful undisturbed sleep this Lancero has blossomed into an incredible smoke. A flavorful bouquet that sends the senses into overdrive. The Colorado Maduro wrapper and extra full body profile never overwhelm the perfectly balanced coffee, chocolate, spice, cashew and tea themes.
The first third is the lightest portion of this vitola dominated by the coffee. The middle 1/3 is the strongest with dominate pepper and chocolate coming through. Seductively drawn to the final 1/3 the strength backs off but a blend of all the flavors seem to meet. No touch ups needed just pure straight ahead smoking bliss.
At $65.00 for a box (bestcigarprices.com) I think this may be the best deal out there. Fans of Pepins may enjoy this as an occasional alternative their "go to" ... the profiles are very different. Just make sure you let them age a bit , you won't be disappointed.
