  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Just dodged a bullet

I'm flying out this afternoon and was sitting at the gate when I heard them page me to return to the ticket counter. Turns out that they inspected my checked bag, opened up my colibri transpack and found my favorite torch lighter inside. Thankfully the airport is small enough that I was able to take it to my car and get back through security with plenty of time to spare.

I have flown multiple times (100+) with this torch in the "DOT approved" transpack and have never had an issue. Let this serve as a reminder that you should never fly with something that you're not willing to lose.

Bullet dodged and lesson learned.

In your checked baggage too, wow. I don't fly often, but I use the same transpack with a ronson or two that I'm not afraid to loose.

wow, close one! I've had the same thing happen, but they didn't bother to tell me, they just confiscated it and left a nice little note. It was totally empty and wouldn't spark up, btw.

I also had a zippo in there with a thunderbird insert but I'm guessing they thought it was just a regular zippo so it has hopefully made it past the TSA goons.

TSA: bullies of the nanny state, saving us from ourselves one outrageous incident after another...(n) Glad you didn't lose that Colibri.

The lighter was actually my prized Palio. It's built like a tank and holds a shit ton of fuel.

Indeed!

A good friend just had this happen to him but he wasn't as lucky... They took away his his turrim and I guess found a note in his bag (even thought it was in the DOT approved case). Not sure if he gets it mailed back or how that works... Good to know that even those DOT cases are not going to be effective in having those items taken away. Glad you were called and they allowed you to put in your car!

See this is my exact worry that I have with flying now. Come December (hopefully) will be the first time I fly with a traveldor and have read that it's a 50/50 depending on TSA feelings that day. Seems that the cigar carry will be fine but any torches may end up being taken away. I only have a couple cheap ones so buying a new cheap one at a shop is fine, same goes with the cutter. Lucky that the airport was small for you to just make a change out with little problem. I'd hate to lose something worth a bit of money with no warning or nothing until you check your bags.

I used to fly with the Colibri transpack and a good lighter too, but I've heard too many horror stories. 90% of the time when I fly, it's to a herf, know the locals will have lighters for me to use. If I'm going on any other type of vacation, I'll just pick up a lighter at my destination.
