Today was supposed to be one of the nicer days this week and so I've been thinking all week about what I wanted to smoke. Well yesterday in chat Shawn and I had a small discussion about what cigar he should smoke and review next. One of them was an LFD and I mentioned that I don't see many reviews on their cigars. So today I decided to review and LFD. Digging through my humidor it turns out I only had one...the Billy Club (courtesy of Bob :thumbsup
. The Billy Club measures in at 40/60 x 5 with a perfecto like shape and sports a lovely reddish chocolatey Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. The filler is Dominican and binder is from Nicaragua. Essentially this is a beefier version of the El Jocko, which measures 32/54 x 4.5, with a different wrapper. Removing the cigar from the cello I'm hit with a blast of brown sugary aroma (similar to what I get off the JDN Antano Dark Corojo) that fades away and leaves a pleasant cinnamon/earth combination. No obvious blemishes and feels solid throughout.
Scalped the cap with my double guillotine and the draw is a little on the tight side, but I'm hesitant to take more off just yet. Flavors are a slightly spiced tobacco (not cinnamon, but vaguely similar...can't place it).
Took a while to get the cigar toasted. Partly due to the wind, but it lit evenly.
Initial flavors were a faint nutty tobacco and a slow build up of pepper on the back of my tongue. Retro-hale reveals a floral and vanilla combination.
The flavors have intensified and are a pleasant buttery/nutty tobacco flavor with some spices (again not quite cinnamon, but similar). The same floral/vanilla combination are present on the retro-hale. The ambient smoke has a nice earthy cinnamon aroma...wish it wasn't so breezy so that the smoke would linger longer . The draw is still a little tight, but getting better. The ash is chalky white and holding very strong.
As you can tell the weather didn't turn out as nice as it was supposed to :frown:. Flavors are still the same. Draw is still a little tight, but not too bad. Burn has been a little off here and there, but has been correcting itself so far.
Had a few visitors join me .
This cigar is definitely not a real powerhouse in terms of strength and the flavors aren't real up in your face, but they are nice. I'm enjoying the cigar a great deal. In case you've been wondering about the strange look of the band...it's an older band (or so I've been told, I haven't been alive that long :laugh
. I must admit that I like the look of the "vintage" band better than the ones they sport now.
Unfortunately the camera ran out of battery power (oops, my bad) and I couldn't find the other camera so the rest of the review is sans pictures. The cigar finished well except that about half way through where the band is in the last picture, the draw started to get tighter and tighter. I finally had to give it up.
Overall a very good cigar and I'm interested to try the Billy Club's smaller brother the El Jocko. A box of 25 retails for $169.50 and singles go for $7.55 which I would consider to be a great price for this cigar. My only gripe is that I would prefer a little more smoke output, but it was adequate. If you're interested in picking some up then visit here.
