La Palina El Diario Kill Bill - smoked today. Sorry no pics--insert pouty face
Here's my inaugural review.
Prelight: Beautiful dark brown-reddish wrapper. Firm to the touch. The wapper smell is earthy with slight orange rind aroma and slight ammonia. The foot is earthy, barnyard with tobacco notes. The draw is soft in flavors but yields cool tobacco, and is slightly tight. Had some dark roast coffee to drink initially, but it washed out the flavors so I quit drinking it after a couple puffs.
First third: Big pepper blast. The flavors are robust and bold, and there is an oily feel to the smoke which is smooth and full body. Smoke production is good. Flavors are oaky with a nice bold tobacco with good spice and light roast coffee and cocoa notes. The draw is tight but manageable. The draw notes continue through the finish, which is medium in length. There is an orangey sweetness with a tinge of bitterness (maybe like a blood orange) on the retrohale that picks up toward the end of the first third along with the coffee coming more to the forefront. The smoke off the foot is musty and peppery. Strength was medium.
Second third: There is no appreciable flavor shift here. Strength was medium.
Final third: Again, little development, but sweetness became orange again without the slight bitterness. More coffee notes. Slight cocoa. Strength approaches full. Caramel pops up on the draw once or twice along with a salty nuttiness. The room aroma is very light with sweet caramel and hay.
Overall: Kind of disappointed, but it's the first one of the four pack I smoked. I plan on dry boxing the next one (something I never do). I really want to like this cigar. Maybe it's the classic packaging and the sexy band; I'm a sucker for that kinda stuff. I recently smoked a J. Fuego Origens Original from a sampler I bought on Cigar Advisor a while back. After that got going I was impressed quite a bit and immediately searched for a box. It was at that point I realized sixty of those puppies are about $135. Hot dog! I just can't get that out of my mind when thinking about a petite format.
Score: 85/B. There was a charred note that stuck around a bit too much to score any higher, which I wanted to do after re-reading the tasting notes. I thought, really? that's only an 85? Smoke time 50 min.
Typed on my iPad so forgive any spelling mistakes.
