  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Las Calaveras EL 2014
Drink: water and The Belvenie 14yr Carribean cask (separate)
Cut with Xicar X1
The cigar presents itself with a velvety/ oily wrapper. With a slight sheen as well.
Prelite draw: Somewhat open draw/slightly loose
Pre-lite: Light tea and milky profile
Start time: 10:22 PM

First puffs: Pepin spice and tobacco(white pepper)

First third: Only 5 mins in and this cigar reminds me of the MF 10 year anniversary/coffin cigar. A little less refined, a little more white pepper.... Milk chocolate, tea and spice.
Ash is flaky, and drops after a inch.

Second third:
All of the pepper/spice is gone. And the cigar is somewhat muted. It is relatively humid outside tonight. And I think this is affecting the cigar as I smoke it. This cigar is easy to retro hale. And through the nose I am getting milk chocolate and plain tobacco still. I am also purging it consistently to help the cigar as it burns.
Second half of this third presents itself with a mushroom, peaty taste. As well as earth and leather. The sweetness is all but gone.

Final third:
Not much change from the second. The milkiness is starting to come back. Purging is still helping as well.
Ambient smoke has a sweetness smell to it as well, which I really like. Other than that, just smoke and lots of it. I'll be putting it down in a few.

Final thoughts:
A few flavors, most were very "silent". Spice to start then it backed off. Was medium bodied to start then became med-full towards the end.
This cigar is young, wet and needs additional aging time.(IMO) I'm sure the additional high humidity outside affected it as well. But like many Pepin tobaccos, I think it will really benefit from downtime. (his La Verite 2009 is really shining right now. And it was a dog when released) In my opinion you really need to put this cigar through the nose in order to taste the silent flavors presented. I think it really does have a lot of aging potential two-three years down the road. Wb thank you for the treat.
Finished: 11:40 PM
1HR 20 mins

Always like your review style Justin. I've been digging these, definitely the flavor of the month for me right now.

imo the burn, smoke output & or flavor profile takes a hit when toking up in humid weather.

will typically purge once or twice, but not the biggest fan myself, that burnoff reeks like a spoiled gunpowder..

Thanks !

Well done, Justin. I'm smoking my third right now. Your review helped me out with the flavors. It's quite humid here as well. I keep having to relight, which makes it burn hot for a while then it goes out. These need time. I had the robusto first, much better than the two toros I've had since. This is one of tr slowest burning cigars I've ever had, too wet. The rest are taking a long nap.

Spring strong sweet tall green grass grow...
Finally decided to pull the trigger on one of these. Ordered a Churchill as was all I could find a single of. Looking forward to trying.
Marshall,
If you like it and want a couple more, I still have singles or a fiver of the 550 Robusto available from a box split that didn't fill up. Just let me know!
Take care,
Clint

Just joined the site a few days ago, so I am late to reading this thread. Great review! I have a box of the 550's and have really enjoyed them. Had the box in my humi for about a month or so before I started smoking them. (That's all the longer I could hold off) I didn't really experience the muted/lack of flavor. Have you smoked more since this review? Just curious to see if your experience with them had improved.

IMO this seem like a cigar that will continue to improve with age, so I am trying to hold back from smoking all of them.....but that's always a tough battle to win.

Bought a box going to sit on it for a while how many were produced?
"A total of 3,000 boxes (72,000 cigars) of Las Calaveras EL 2014 were produced at the My Father Cigars S.A. factory in Esteli, Nicaragua, under the supervision of Jose “Pepin” Garcia and Jaime Garcia."

I'm still letting mine rest for a while, can't wait to try them out.

Yea, with only 1,000 boxes of each vitola, I'm going to try and save some of mine as well. Currently have 18 of 24 remaining. I'd like to have a dozen or so aged a year before I smoke them.....so i need to lay off them for a bit.

So, from what I understand, these will be released every year, to commemorate the fallen from the previous year? I wonder if they will always be released in these three vitolas if this is the case? I think a Corona Gorda and a petite lance would be a nice addition to this line in the future.
