  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

This review is about the LAS MEMORIAS CUBANA GORDO. Here is what the manufacturers/retailers describe this cigar.

This cigar is produced by La Tradición Cubana in Miami's Little Havana, Las Memorias Cubana cigars are full-bodied cigars that feature large ring gauges between 60 and 64.

The underlying strength comes from the Dominican and Nicaraguan Ligero filler. The Honduran binder and Ecuador-grown Sumatra wrapper give the cigar it's leathery, cedary flavor that leaves a lasting "twang" on the palate.

This cigar was part of my Dog Watch Cigar Club and I received two. I had issues with the first one, so I held off with my review until I smoked the second one.

Pre-light inspection shows this a nice Sumatra wrapper, but the wrapper is extremely fragile and easily cracks. Both cigars cracked at the point of cutting at the shoulder. I cut one with my Palio and the second with my V cut Firstland cutter. Each cracked causing difficulty in maintaining the cigar during the smoke. Very small veins in the cigar, which made this wrapper very smooth. Hints of wood and light vanilla came off this cigar prior to lighting. Initial taste on the tongue was light cedar and white pepper.

After toasting this cigar, which took some time due to the large ring gauge, this cigar lit very well. Flavors of cedar, leather, and sweetness (vanilla/carmel) came through, as did a slight hint to white pepper. This is not a full bodied cigar in any way. Great blue grey smoke came from this one, which was very pleasant. The initial finish was good, but changed later in the cigar.

The wrapper also cracked very easily in my hands, just by holding it during an inhale.

This cigar stayed with the same flavors throughout the entire cigar, until the last 1 1/2 inch, when nicotine overtook this cigar. In my opinion, this cigar's large ring gauge helped keep the nictoine in check until the end. I also had wrapper issues the entire time I smoked this, due to the fragile wrapper. The crown unraveled on both cigars and continued to unravel at the binder. I do not like smoking a cigar that I taste raw tobacco in my mouth, as well as pick out chunks.

It should be noted that I did not keep this cigar in my mouth and placed in my Tatuaje ashtray most of the time or kept it in my hand. The cigar was not moist and was dry boxed prior to smoking.

Although this cigar was a good smoke, less the wrapper issues, I was not impressed. On a scale of 1-10, I would rate this one a 7.0 and that is generous. It is a medium bodied smoke with good flavor, but flavor is not the only thing to consider in a cigar. I probably will not smoke another one and definitely won't buy one, unless a new wrapper is place on this cigar. Possibly a good Conneticut or Rosado would compliment this cigar better.

Thanks for taking the time to read and hope the review helps.
