L'Atelier is a new company (another) from Pete Johnson of Tatuaje. The name of the company means "The Workshop" in french; and with the new stuff the brand is creating I can see why he chose the name. The Flagship line pays homage to the Cohiba Behike line in both line size, as well as Band/Box design influence. Much like the Behike utilizes a rare leaf (Medio Tiempo) for its wrapper, the L'Atelier uses a leaf that has never been used on a cigar before; Sancti Spiritus. The wrapper was developed by the Oliva family and is a cross between Criollo and Pelo de Oro seed.
Construction: The construction is great with a perfect "Fan" tip and descent weight for the slightly larger ring gauge. No spot softs to be found on the stick; the wrapper color really makes the gold/black/white label stand out. Burn is near perfect for the length of the stick with nice, clean 1 1/2 inch ash chunks.
Pre-Light: Wrapper has an interesting aroma, very delicate and faint; Hay, slightly musty with a touch of cream. The foot has a strong barnyard aroma. Pre-light draw has an interesting mineral and barnyard flavor with a draw that was just a little looser than I like.
1st 3rd: Flavor starts right off the bat Medium-bodied, Nutty, Meaty, with a touch of light spice. Retrohale is all nuts, and lingering flavors on the palate are of nuts, tea, and a spice on the lips. Very enjoyable.
2nd 3rd: Flavors change slightly with a richer finish, predominately woody (not cedar), sour nuts, and minerals with a slightly acrid/ammonia note.
Final 3rd: Flavors remain constant with the reintroduction of a pleasant tea note, and a slightly harsh tone overall with about an inch left.
Overall this cigar is extremely delicate in flavor; subtle transitions, with every flavor almost "softened" to allow the flavors to mingle and not over-power each other. I found the ammonia note to be more prevalent in a few samples and almost non-exsitant in others, regardless it isn't a harsh or dominate note and is still enjoyable. Saying this is anything other than a box purchase would be a lie as I have already bought a box.
