It's an absolutely gorgeous spring day (if a bit chilly for mid-April), and after the storms of the last few days, I was looking for a good stogie for a little relaxation. And to Gokian, yes the flip-flops make a comeback today :stretchgr
AVO LE10
Size: 5.5x55 'super robusto' (I'm stealing Brooks' term here)
Blend: Ecuadorian Sungrown wrapper, Mexican/Sumatran binder, Dominican filler
MSRP: $15/ea (but I have seen them for less online)
Appearance: This cigar has a very smooth, mildly oily dark brown wrapper that smells very strongly of barnyard and tobacco. Moistening the head before the cut leaves my tongue tingly with spice. Very solid and pretty hefty, as this is a fairly large cigar. I've always thought AVO bands were very cool, and this is no exception. The classic AVO band in dark gray and white with silver foiled is coupled with a silver foil band that reads "Limited Edition' with a silhouette of Avo himself. Cut was easy and clean, and cold draw reveals dark chocolate with peppery spice.
First 3rd:
Inital draws provide strong leather and spice, much more than I'm used to in AVO sticks, with tons of smoke. I was expecting a cigar of this RG to have an annoyingly loose draw, however this one is perfect. Aftertaste has the familiar AVO musky-ness, but much less so than say, a Domaine or Heritage. Spice fades after ~15 puffs, and is slowly replaced by a chocolatey sweetness. Overall a smooth start, but I can tell this will be very full-flavored.
Second 3rd:
The spice fades further as hints of coffee and earth start coming through. The ash is the most solid I've seen in a long while, almost zero flakyness, and holds for over 2". Flavors have become predominantly black coffee and leather. At the halfway point, I'm starting to miss the spice a bit, but that doesn't detract from the other flavors (just personal preference). It slowly starts to build a charcoal smoky-ness. The burn was just a bit slanted due to a vein running the length of the stick, but was never enough to require a touch-up.
Third 3rd:
Burn and draw continue to be awesome, with clouds of spicy-sweet smoke. The retrohale blasted my sinuses with black pepper and hickory charcoal, and left my eyes watering (easy way to fix allergies btw). Leather and coffee continue to the nub, with a creamy chocolate finish. Didn't get hot or squishy til the very end.
Final Thoughts:
Another great cigar from the folks at AVO. I've always enjoyed their sticks, and this one is definitely above average. Tons of great flavor, great construction, this is everything you can ask for in a premium cigar. I'm probably going to have to get another box before they're all gone.
Score: 90
Smoking Time: 1:40
Thanks for reading, brothers!
