  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

i've decided the old adage "don't judge a book by it's cover" is still true. when you hold this stick it just doesn't feel right. box press, to me, has always been a round cigar pressed to a basically square condition. this baby is more like a stack of tongue depressors, at least 2 times wider than it is deep. it was even difficult to cut with a xikar. just the tip fit, but enough was trimmed to get a decent draw. the prelight draw was a little bit acrid. this kind of concerned me as it's overall construction appeared very good and had that nice dark oscuro like wrapper i prefer on lfd's. the next worrisome bit was that it took some effort to get it lit. not sure why, but it took about three times to get it well ignited. now, had i been a professional and only smoked the first third in order to judge, i would have said this was an overpriced, overhyped too strong stick. but luckily, i ain't no pro. just before half way, this baby opened up! the draw was full and just right. the smoke was full and almost chewy (always liked that descriptor). the flavor was deep and rich, and while it was plenty strong, it had enough cocoa to keep it toned down to the point where i actually nubbed it with no appreciable changes.
so, on a 0 - 10, i'd give it an 8. i'm pretty conservative and don't think i've ever smoked a 10. had the early issues not been there, i'd bump it up another 1/2 point. the wide and flat shape and the price were still an issue to me, but the ugly duckling turned into a pretty decent swan.

Nice review and yes I agree it's a weird cigar and not a typical box press at all. Totally looks like that had to stick that thing in a machine to get those perfect corners like that, strange. A normal box press will turn more round when it's burning and the tobacco has warmth to help it open up those are a bit different with those tight corners. They do taste good though!

Thanks for the review, Bob! One question: how was the burn? I'm really intrigued how ye can correct any minor issues by rotating the cigar with such a weird shape...

Great review, thank you.

I found the blend on this smoke to be lacking to the number II. The cigar is also a little more flat and wide in construction then it's older brother. Having said that, it is hard to compare the II to the III because the age of the II is now 2 years old(ish). I still found the smoke to be a great one and would recommend it to any of the family here.

I did not have problems with the lighting of the smoke and I think the shape is just a preferance thing that you like or don't. Litto of course pushes the edges in his shapes which at the least is refreshing.

I am no pro either, but I agree with your review. it is an 8 of a smoke and I wish it were cheaper because I would buy it more often.

Thanks again for a great review.

once it got past the initial ignition, it really burned straight and true.
as one who frequently rotates the cigar while smoking, the shape was indeed off putting. you can only go from one flat side to the other as the sides are too tall to allow you to have your lips closed. holding it in your teeth is strange too. don't think it's something your would, or would want to, get used to.

That's good to hear. I figured it'd be strange to rotate it, so at least there's notmuch to worry there.
