  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

This cigar was traded at my local B&M for a Satori "Karma." The "pig" was aged just short of a year and was covered with a light frosting of plume. I asked my friend whether I should let it rest and he told me to "fire way" after he heard I had a decent lunch.

As a newbie, this can be a daunting looking smoke. I have read and watched reviews and new it was a big smoke. How does one cut it, light it, and smoke such an unusual looking to make sure it doesn't burn hot, etc?

PRE-LIGHT AROMA

The cigar smelled of rich earth and appeared to be in excellent condition and well constructed with no soft spots but didn't feel like a brick either. The foot gave off aromas of mild pepper and maybe a hint of dark roast coffee.

RITUAL

This isn't usually included in a review, but I figured there may be other newbies of people who have never smoke this before. Ironically, my friend let me use a La Privada cutter with a closed back end. I cut it 3 times. The first cut clipped the tail, the second cut a nice opening, but a smidge too small. The final clip was perfect; about 1/2 inch, give or take.

I took great care not to over light given the small opening at the foot. I toasted from far away with a Lotus 3 flamer and when the small opening turned uniformly grey and I fired it up, which it did with ease.

FIRST 1/3

This cigar produced lots of white smoke and had a perfect draw right out of the gate. As you will notice from the pictures, the burn was perfect aside from a slight wave that never needed correction; impressive given its shape. Furthermore, being aware not to over smoke this and taking my time, it NEVER went out.

The initial blast was not a blast at all. It started with the richest sweetest white pepper I had ever tasted. (newbie reminder goes HERE) This cigar built in flavor but never got harsh. I was not far into this smoke before I knew I was smoking something special. I kept on expecting this smoke to get bigger in flavor, but it was the richness of the white pepper and body of the smoke that was impressive.

SECOND 1/3

At this point I felt like I was speaking gibberish to anybody who would listen. People were watching football at my B&M and just smiling and nodding, probably thinking I am a dork. But when one is relatively new to smoking and they start smoking and enjoying new cigars and feel their palette expanding, it is a great experience. This cigar was different in that the richness just got better with every puff. I was reminded of the Nub and its mission being "to make the whole cigar a sweet spot," or something to that affect. The PIG does exactly that. When I lighted this cigar 1/4 inch in and FLAME AND FLAVOR "ON." Btw, the cigar continued to burn perfectly and did NOT burn hot, despite its size. That said, I was made aware of this, I kept it in mind and paced myself, and was rewarded handsomely by a flavorful cigar that never burned hot.

FINAL 1/3

This cigar started to send me some surprises wrapped in a dry brown sugar flavors. If you can imagine unsweetened brown sugar or caramelized sweet white pepper. Really pleasurable and sweet tasting, but complex and full, not sugary. At this point the cigar was starting to hit me a little, but never in my stomach or mouth. I felt a slight nic hit and slight tingle in my lips, but NOT harsh.

About an inch from the end, the cigar seemed to stop burning wrapper but still smoked. It seemed to stop drawing or stop drawing flavor. I took the liberty of "re-igniting," as opposed to a re-light. FLAME ON again and it started to burn wrapper and produce some sweet flavors. At this point, mostly because I didn't want it to end, it did start to feel hot in my fingers. I wish I had a clip or pin of some sort. After 95 minutes, I had to say goodbye, albeit reluctantly.

FINAL COMMENTS

This cigar was different from the diet of Tatuajes I have been smoking and was a pleasure from being to end in every way. It was sort of like driving a Ferrari. Lots of head turns and questions at the B&M. But a Ferrari goes as well as it shows and this cigar is no gimmick, it is the real thing. A fabulous and rich smoke.

4 1/2 stars (out of five)

I will be interested to see how I feel about this smoke as I plan to procure some and let them age and my palette expand.

Nice review! I have smoked one pig so far (a couple months back) and unfortunately the flavor was masked by way too much ammonia. I plan on revisiting them soon though.

After only a year I'd be skeptical about that, but then I'm not one to age my cigars :dunno:. But after having one of these last night, I do have to agree they are a damn fine smoke and I look forward to having another on my B-day .

I really like this cigar. I have a box that I scored at Burning Leaf during the Jonathan Drew event and I am rationing them carefully. The T52 blend of these is out as well I believe, but all the places that had them listed were sold out. If some one has a line on these let me know!

Well, he brushed it off before he gave it to me, but I KNOW he ages cigars and has 3 different cabinets, all with different humidity levels, depending on his proximity to smoking. Meaning, it goes from the "aging" humi, to the "holding humi," to the "smoking" humi.

Now THAT is the kind of obsession I can respect!

Great review, glad you enjoyed the Flying Pig!

Those are/were my favorite vitola for the #9. Awesome smoke, a 5/5 for me. The #9 toro is a great cigar for sure, but the Piggy is something special!! Can't wait for the T-52 Flying Pig :)
