  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I've bought a variety of cheap lighters, including Ronson. Problem is that they will work fine at first, but then they will only light sometimes. If they do light, the flame's ok but often they won't light at all. Bleeding and adding fuel doesn't always solve the problem. Any ideas?

i've had the same issues. i've opened up the adjustment and it helps sometimes. i've bled them dry, used super distilled gas and i still end up having to hold it down and let the gas escape for a few seconds and then try and let it light. it's frustrating.

My first torch, can't remember what it was, worked perfectly for 6 or 7 months. Since then, I've purchased 5 other torch lighters of different varieties and costs, and none of them has functioned properly for more than a week or two.

So I have the same problem, Saully... it just seems that most of these types of lighters are of unbelievably poor quality/consistency.

My best lighter was a Ronson, until it just plain died. Not bat for $5. My Colibri torches work well, but one has a super high flame, and other a low flame. If I touch the flame adjustment, they won't light.

My Xikar Flint lighter is great for the cigar bar, but not so much in a breeze.

THe bottom line for me is I need to pick up another Ronson.

Go to Wally World, I picked up a Ronson jet flame lighter for $2.98! Its one of the best lighters I've owned. The only other lighter I've ever had luck with are my Zippo's, but alot of people say they can taste the fuel, I guess my taste buds are shot as I can't.

Buy a Xikar. The Exec is under $25, and Xikar has an unconditional lifetime guarantee. If you get pissed and break it, it stops working, you don't like the color, whatever, just bring it into ANY Xikar retailer and they will give you a new one on the spot. If they don't, I would bitch out the shop owner and let Xikar know as well.

Bringing this back up so I don't have to start a new thread...

Now the only lighter that I have ever really liked stopped arching on me about 2 weeks ago. I can see the spark going from the outer frame to the inner frame but will not arch to the center of the lighter. I really don't want to toss this one and was wondering if anyone else has seen this same issue and might have a quick fix. Any help would be appreciated because right now I am using a Kool bic lighter and it sucks. Just can't bring myself to get another torch until I know my other one is truly gone:( Thanks bros! Nick

I'll add my case here.... Just the other night my torch was fine when I lit an Opus... about 2 and a half hours later the stick went out... and I tried to relight it... but my torch failed me. I tried refiling it... and still, nothing. It sparks, lights up for like 1/2 sec, and just goes out on me. Will not relight. What can I do??

Best lighter I've bought. I bleed it sometimes but never have a lighting problem. It almost ALWAYS light when I click the button as long as it has fuel. As we know fuel is important. I only use quad refined fuel in it as well. Plus it's not a blue flame it's sort of a hybrid torch with a soft orange flame but some heat that is torch like you just can't see the "laser" of the torch if you will. I think I paid $40 for mine over a year ago. Way better than the colibri lighters I've bought. The colibris still work just not very well.

Have you tried using a can of compressed air to blow any accumulated crud out of the burner? It's a good idea to do that fairly regularly.

It is a SCAM!!

My $100+ lighters don't work worth a damn
My $75 lighter doesn't work worth a damn
My $20 - $40 lighters are decent
My $11 Zplus Zippo conversion has never failed in the past 3 years.

I love my Dupont Xtend and use it religiously. Never had any problems. One thing to remember is that with any lighter, use 4 or 5x refined fluid. That way, any imperfection, dirt, etc, is kept out of the lighter mechanism.
