  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Don't take them.

Once you get there, pick up a few bic lighters. Plus, depending on which ship/line you sail with, they may very well have a cigar lounge on board and you won't need one.

Whenever I travel I end up grabbing a couple of Bic's when I land, or if I'm lucky my destination has a Walmart with a Jetlite still on the rack. If I'm staying for an extended period on business I'll send a MFR box ahead to my hotel with Stuff that can't fly. Couple of lighters, full size shaving cream and hair goop, etc...

Yeah, I won't do it for short trips, but sometimes I'm out on business for weeks at a time and those little bottles/tubes get frieken annoying

Agree with everyone else. Last time I flew they took my Bic lighter from a checked in bag and left a note telling me it was a no no. At least they did not confiscate my cigars.

I flew twice this year with a lighter in my checked bag and they didn't take it. I wouldn't take a dupont with me but a cheap one you won't mind losing.

Technically, 1 butane lighter per person is allowed in carry-on. Lighters are only allowed in checked Baggage if they are new and I fueled or enclosed in special DOT approved cases.

In practice however I've had full lighters in my checked Baggage make it through and agents confiscate a single bic from my briefcase. As a result I just don't bother. I could cause a stink, but every time I've questioned the supervisor inside has called "discretion of the inspector" and told me I can file a complaint with TSA. Just not worth missing my flight or the time on the paperwork when I can grab a box at any gas station or convenience store. Worst case most hotel bars still keep matches.

Soft flame has never been a problem for me when traveling.. I throw a couple of ronson refillables in my carry on and no one has ever looked twice or cared..

Torches will get grabbed by TSA if they are in your carry on..

But.. I've thrown ronson torches in check bags countless times and never caught any grief over it..

I've had good luck with a couple of Ronson jet lites in colibri's tranzpack approved lighter case. That being said I don't fly very often.

For those that have this issue which I know is mainly personal preference ...why not just use wooden matches those few days? I prefer my zippo which some show Disdain for without the insert but it doesn't affect the taste for me but when I travel I just go with matches

I've done it in a pinch, but with Bic style lighters cheap and common enough pretty much anywhere in the world I prefer the convenience.

Like I said I prefer my lighters too but Save smoking on a boat or beach or in a windstorm are matches that inconvenient I honestly don't get it.

Personal preference I guess. Unless they're long matches I always find myself going through several to toast the foot and get a good even light, and of course the inevitable burnt fingertips when I try to stretch it too long. To me that's inconvenient enough to warrant a disposable lighter purchase, to others maybe not.
