  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

I'm a frequent flyer and always bring 2 torches with me in a colibri teams-pack. 30+ flights this year and no problems whatsoever. I also bring a couple of Bics as backup in my carry on just in case. Bics are allowed in your carry on but not in your check in.

That being said, these are domestic flights. I have had Bics confiscated more than once on international flights and no longer carry them.

In my previous job, I traveled a lot and discovered that, when flying domestically, standards and procedures were different from place to place. Pretty irritating when you consider that the TSA is part of a federal agency. SHOULD be consistent, but...

I once argued with an agent about whether or not I was allowed to bring my tripod on-board (no damned way am I checking it). I told him that I carried it on the previous week. His first response was "here at Midway?" First, YES and secondly WHO CARES WHICH AIRPORT???

So, that being said, I'd rather have a $1.00 Bic confiscated than a more expensive butane lighter.

As other have said , I still travel a fair amount, I'll carry a couple of lighters with me, my torch lighter goes in a DOT approved carrier, the handy dandy bic will go in carry on....

That being said , I have had TSA take my torch lighter away even in the DOT carrying case , but here lately, I have found that TSA has just emptied the tank....
It all depends on the TSA agent and how they read the guidelines (if they can read) ....

Disposable soft flame and zippos are permitted in your carry on on on your person. If they are in checked bags they must be in a DOT approved case.

Torch lighters are still quite the debate. Not allowed in the cabin period but some sources say they can be in checked bags so long as they are in a DOT approved container while other sources say no.
I've had two torches confiscated in DOT containers in my checked bag within the last 6 months and no issues with a bic in my pocket. Of course I didn't find out about the torches until I got to the other end and opened my bag to find a note.

I used to carry jetlites and not worry about the 60-70% of the time they got confiscated because they're so cheap (one cool TSA agent just purged it and handed it back to me.)

The last two years I've been carrying PLASTIC torches - like http://www.cigarsinternational.com/lighters/38496/moretti-carbon-fiber-jet-torch-lighter/ and dealextreme's $2 jets. I have yet to have one confiscated from carryons OR checked baggage -- apparently, they appear harmless when xray-ed.

btw, those 'carbon fiber' looking lighters were $3 per on cbid

I'm traveling a lot here in a second and just plan on using erjaqs lighter in California then picking up new ones overseas since I too have had them confiscated.

In Beijing I had a triple flame plastic lighter that was confiscated at the security check. The lady pulled it from my bag and ignited it. Triple flames, as everyone knows, are pretty bold. She looked at me like I was an idiot, set it aside, and motioned me to move along. She didn't speak English but the message was clear lmao

I just totally forgot I had it. Nonetheless, I'm not willing to lose any nice lighters or cutters so I'll just pick up a cheap one when I'm on the other side. Prob throw cheap plastic cutters in my checked bag, but no lighter.

A plastic triple-flame? That's screaming for a catastrophic (yet hilarious) flameout!

I've never had a problem bringing butane lighters with me to Florida or even a trip out of the country to the Dominican Republic. I placed them in my checked bags and no issues, luckily. Even my cutter and punches went through the checked bag without issue. Although now that I see you guys shared a link for a DOT/TSA approved case for lighters, I think I'll have to buy one or two.

I have brought cutters and torches everywhere, both domestic and international and have not had any issues.
