  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Looking for suggestions

Hey guys, I'll be heading down to smokin joes in Ny to browse their wonderfully huge selection of sticks. Normally I smoke cubans, but I've been hearing lots of raves for the non cubans. I'd say my favorites are partagas, lately I smoked a SD4 and absolutely loved it. What can you guys recommend that can sway me from my love of the expensive cubans.

In my opinion, it's plain and simple....Tatuaje!

The brown bands are the closest thing I have found to smoking authenic CC's.

Dion's Illusiones and Cruzados and damn near anything by Don Pepin Garcia (DPG).

I do have one tatuaje that I bought a few weeks ago. From looks it reminds me of a monte cristo #4, perhaps a little smaller. It has a brown ring on it. I should have taken a better look at the box when I picked it up, but I just grabbed a bunch of singles that were less than 10 bucks at the time.
Also picked up a ghurka black dragon that will probably sit in my humi for a long time, it's a little intimidating since I'm used to cigars in the petite corona range.

NY? Go to Davidoff at Maddison Ave.

EDIT - And to answer yer question; get loads of singles. Sample as much as ye can. Tell the people there what ye look for in a cigar, they should be helpful.

Not New York city, The Indian Reservation close to Niagara Falls New York, can't think of the name of the town off the top of my head.

That would be a Tatuaje Noella. The Noella (5 1/8 x 42) is one of the original Seleccion de Cazador, at a Petit size called Marevas - and is a great shorter smoke, although not that short.

Just thought I'd let you guys know what I picked up. I'll be going back in a week or so to grab a few more. I grabbed an Oliva "Series V double belicoso", a don pepin "my father #3", and an ashton "VSG robusto".

I was looking for the casa royale, but I didn't see those, they had a nice selection of Illusion so I will pick up one of those next week. Darn all this crappy weather we've had in this neck of the woods. Rain, wind, rain, wind. I'm dying to light up but can't smoke in the house.

As good as Cubans are... I think that with the Illusione, Tatuaje and LFD\LG cigars that are available, the playing field has damn near been leveled. I think that to many people but stock in them being from Cuba versus taste, consistency, and most important price. I am not trying to bust on you but this is just my humble opinion.

the non cubans are a little harder to find north of the border. A few are not even available in Canada from what I have been told. I went to a reputable humidor and asked the guy for about 6 diifferent non cubans that were in the Cigar Aficionado magazine and he had nothing. I'm sure it is because up here cubans are legal and most people want them, I'm hoping that if I like the non cuban sticks that I will have better access to them.
Smokin Joes isn't a huge drive for me, but you never know what is going to happen at customs. So anytime I am in the area I grab 2 or 3 sticks to try out. I love the prices in the States for the non cubans, but canada has a 55% tax rate on all cigars, so it makes the cubans and non cubans almost the same price up here.

I did try one padron cigar, but I wasn't that thrilled with the taste. It burned like a champ though, perfect from start to finish but it didn't do anything for me.

That's a Tat Unicos. Great smoke.
