Los Blancos Cigarros Sumatra - Torpedo 6.5 X 52
This is a cigar from the Dogwatch Cigar Club and is the first for May. Smoked this one tonight at work, well tried to at least.
The Los Blancos Cigar Company was founded in the USA in 1998, however, the family’s history and roots in the tobacco industry can be traced back to Cuba’s western-most province of Pinar del Rio and their cousins of 80 years, the Plasencia family. The Plasencias, whose roots are also found in Pinar del Rio, are today one of the preeminent tobacco families in the industry. The Plasencias run all farming and manufacturing operations in both Danlí, Honduras and Estelí, Nicaragua.
The Los Blancos Cigar Company corporate offices and North America Distribution Center are located in the City of Chicago. The Blanco family believes in a strong family oriented business and as a result much of the family is involved in one aspect of the business or another.
These cigars are masterfully blended with tobacco from our family’s fields in the Jalapa (Nicaragua) and Jamastran (Honduras) Valleys. These complex elements are then united using a sumatran wrapper imported from Indonesia and combined into perfectly balanced cigars. You will find these mild-to-medium bodied cigars slightly peppery with a woody aroma. Wonderfully rich cigars!
Manufactured in Esteli Nicaragua
Wrapper grown in Indonesia
Binder grown in Honduras
Filler grown in Nicaragua
This cigar was in a cello and appeared to be well made. Nice medium veins, which ran the length of the cigar. No construction issues were apparent. The wrapper is a nice medium brown color with a good amount of an oily sheen present. Hints of white pepper, chocolate and oak emitted from the cigar. After cutting the cap with my Palio cutter, the pre-light taste of chocolate was immediately present, as was the white pepper. The draw seemed a little restricted, which caused me some initial concerns.
I toasted this cigar and it seemed to have a draw issue. After several times to get this cigar going, I finally had to use my Henry’s Draw tool to open the draw up, but the cigar still had a good amount of restriction. I continued to manipulate the draw, until finally I was able to taste the flavor and produce some decent smoke. The pepper and chocolate came forth with a nice sweetness. The flavor was not overpowering and seemed to compliment the Vernor’s Ginger Ale I was drinking. The burn was ok with a touch up that needed to occur.
The second third continued with a draw issue, but with a struggle, a lot of smoke was emitting from this cigar. Still a good mixture of flavor provided a medium bodied flavor. The draw issue continued into the final third, but I braved it out. The finish was good with no harsh after taste.
Overall, the blend was good, but the draw issues overpowered the pleasure in this cigar. Perhaps this was a just a plugged one, but who knows. The draw issue was a huge concern and ruined the good blend/flavor for me. I will definitely smoke the 2nd one, just to see if this is a consistency issue or a fluke. On a scale of 1 to 10, I rate this one at a 6 to 7, mainly because of the blend.
