  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Hello. Hope all are well. I'm new to BOTL and will intro myself as I navigate this great site further... For now I need some help please as I learn daily the in's & out's of the cigar hobby. Love Connecticut's & Maduros the most w/ mild Habanos following. Have most down pat, but a little confused about the diff. between maduros & oscuros. I know an oscuro is at times called a "double maduro" because of the intense, lengthier fermentation process and more time in the sun. Which has a more intense or deeper, richer maduro-like taste? And, why if you know. Maybe it's just part of the blending process to achieve a certain flavor profile. But, bottom line; does a pure maduro wrapper achieve a more intense maduro-like flavor OR does an oscuro wrapper or filler achieve the same different or intense results? I'm confusing myself, hope I'm not confusing you... Bottom line: MADURO vs. OSCURO!!! Thanks piedpiper62 (LeRoy W. Lee)

No expert but I believe Oscuro wrappers are generally taken from the top priming of the plant so they have more access to sun light and tend to start maturing earlier in the process. The tobacco is naturally thicker, darker and fuller bodied because of the extra sun light. The curing process for both Maduro and Oscuro is very similar, the main difference being Maduro can refer to any priming on the plant.

As fare as my taste buds Oscuro wrappers tend to be Maduro plus, slower burning, thicker and richer if not a bit "harsher" then standard Maduro wrappers. I have to be careful when selecting cigars with Oscuro wrappers because often they are just too strong for my taste buds. Something else to be aware of it that sometimes standard maduro wrappers are dyed and sold as Oscuro wrappers, you can tell because your finger tips will pick up that dye.

Just what I understand and I will gladly defer to burners with more experience.

I've found CBL mads to be a bit sweeter, and the oscuro to have a bit more Earth and spice. (To be overly simple about it)
And hab wrappers are usually pretty spicy. Conn shade is generally the "mild" wrapper, although that's becoming less and less accurate with stuff like Warped and UC Shade bringing some umph..

Again, an over generalization..
