  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Anyhow, i tried a Gurkah for the first time. No flavor what so ever, tobacco consistantly more like a large cigarette. Burned well but poor construction as the cap came of before lighting and the wrapper on fire end started unraveling on the third quarter. I know its still wrong thread bear with me till i find my way around this large room.

Sounds like a pretty standard Gurkha introduction..... ;) The Bueso is good (but everyone's taste and appreciation for strength is different)

Also agree with @mjones9630 statement. CAO is usually pretty good for a large company, don't know about that particular one though. Heard 50/50 on the bahia and Cinco Vegas. I think the Perla is supposed to be OK. No clue on the others.
What have you liked so far? Any brands or style that have stood out to you as good? We all have different preferences, but they sometimes fall into categories.

OK, well, I'm not sure what to direct you towards based on that, but some of the other guys may be able to. Samplers are a good idea to find your preferences, but often you're better off to get the ones that cost a little bit more and come with fewer sticks. You'll be burning through less garbage. Famous and Atlantic have some great options. I for the most part avoid altadis products, (though plenty of people, not many here, like them) they just mass produce so much, and it helps avoid the confusion of NC (non cuban) vs. CC (cuban) versions of things. (completely different) but as far as big companies go there are several General products I like. CAO generally does a good job. The tatuaje/Pete Johnson blends are well done and well liked, but tend to lean a little heavy on the Nicaraguan pepper profile for me. Most people seem to like the drew estate (non flavored) lines, (some decidedly do not) I'm kinda in the middle..

Who is it that can't stand TpT signatures?

Inexpensive cigars are a decent way to determine the flavor profiles you appreciate. Once you decide if you like milder or more full bodied cigars, lots of pepper, lots of chocolate, more vegetal flavors etc you can look at fine tuning your selections. I have eight of the ten cigars you showed, only 2 or 3 of which I would reorder and keep in my humidor. Taste them, read the reviews and before ordering cigars try to find ones that fit your flavor profile. I also have cigars that I didn't like when I first got them but after 6-12 months rest became enjoyable. There is so much information available on the internet it's easy to do your research. Once I embraced the hobby the cost of more expensive cigars, that I really like, isn't as important as when I first started out. If I am going to invest an hour and a half in a cigar a couple of bucks is no longer a determining factor.

I just had my first Padron, now I'm hooked. I kind of want to go thru my humi's and toss everything I know I'm not going to enjoy as much as that Padron.
Tell the BOTLs what you like and having been there and done that they can send you in the right direction.

Welcome to the hobby

Depending on what the A. Fuente you had was, you may find that you like cameroon wrapped cigars. I can say that the Torano 1916 and the Perdomo2 cameroon series are very good! the perdomo2 is really strong though, so eat up before hand if you get some.

@GaryPoe, the best answer I received when starting out was to try everything. You'll start to learn what you like and don't like. The forum is a great place to ask other people's opinions on cigars but remember that it's the opinion of other people's palates and it may not align with yours. So again, try everything.

After I spent a few months of buying and smoking a bunch of different sample packs and singles; I moved to buying 5 packs of cigars that fit my flavor/strength profile so I could get into aging and see how that changes the profile.

If there are any cigars you'd like to try and you can't find it locally, let me know. If I have it or can get it, I'll send it your way.
