  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Matches or Lighter?

Well I have heard both sides of the story and I just don't know. Some people have told me that you should light cigars with matches only and others said butane. Well this summer when I was on the golf course every weekend I couldn't light my cigars with matches, so I bought a butane lighter with punch cuts on the bottom, but I don't want to cheapen my cigar what should I use?

Try them both out, see what ye like. Some use Zippos because they notice no difference, some use spills because they do. Few complain over butane lighters, though; which is what I usually use.

If I am outside I'll go with butane inside I use matches. I have never noticed a difference between them, although I did notice a change in taste with a zippo.

Only thing Idon't use is a zippo... it affects flavor for me... but not everyone.

Matches
Spills
Butane Torch
Butane Soft Flame

so many options... as Moro said, try them all and see what you like. Different strokes for different folks!

Thanks guys this really helps. I agree the matches do add to the experience, but the butane is really handy. It usually never dissapoints at lighting the whole cigar rather than half burning.

If you are gonna use matches, I recommend you use "sulfur free" matches.

I myself use a lighter, both a soft flame (similar to matches) and a torch flame.

By the way trust me when I say "been there, done that"; but in the end ye'll see cigars aren't really rocket science.

Amen to that.

For my part, I usually don't use a zippo because the start can taste a little funky to me. I didn't used to like using butane lighters but I do now because they're so damn handy.

Very slight difference I've noticed lighting it with matches.

I kinda like to light it with those little pieces of cedar and give it that great woody start right off the bat (then again, for some reason I don't like a lot of cigars when they first start).

If I can matches, if not what ever I can find to light the cigar......Just get it lit.

I use matches when I can.

Not for flavor but because it adds to the experience.
Same here. Part of what I enjoy is the ritual of the whole thing. Wooden matches are part of that for me. That said, when I can't find a box, or it's too windy, I use a soft flame butane and never noticed a difference.

I have yet to try a butane torch. I know some people are real fond of that approach.

I use a mini butane torch 99% of the time. I just like the fast and accurate light you can get from a torch. I've notice a lot let burn problems as well.
