MBOMBAY Habano Blend
(given to me for the purpose of review)
Robusto: 4.5 X 48 (SRP $9.00)
Wrapper: Ecuador Habano
Binder: Ecuador Criollo
Filler: Nicaraguan and Puru
The artwork on these bands is gorgeous. I don't think it could have been designed any better. The colors play off each other beautifully...now if only they came off easier. The large decorative initial band was a PITA to get off (although if I wasn't trying to keep it perfect then it wouldn't have been such an issue and I ended up destroying it anyway lol). It's wrapper is a delicious shade of brown and to put the cherry on top, they finished it off with a closed foot. Time to get into the meat and potatoes of this unique Habano.
The draw is effortless and the cap cut with ease, like a fresh pair of scissors through a sheet of paper. I can definitely taste the sandalwood that is unique to the aging process of this tobacco. The smoke is dry and crisp with a balanced bite of pepper through the retro. The sweetness is very acidic (if that makes sense) like an apple cider vinegar. The smoke starts out nutty immediately followed by the tangy vinegar that is laced lightly with sandalwood. The pepper peeks at you through the middle and the whole profile finishes soft like honey.
The burn and draw are rolling along splendidly. If you sip lightly, an underlying sweetness emerges that is soft and plays nicely with the sandalwood. The pepper also has a volume knob that is controlled by the draw and is very sensitive. The burn rate is surprisingly un-rushed for the size and ease of draw. The body of the smoke is building through the middle and bring a bit of creaminess along with it. The strength is a solid medium. The profile is simple and consistent.
The spice picks up into the nub while the burn stays excellent. The nub is nice and cool and the profile hasn't skipped a beat; medium body, medium strength with an enhanced spice in the nub. There is a sweetness that envelopes the tongue every once in a while along with a soft creaminess. I can really taste the sandalwood in the nub. It is nice to see a unique touch such as sandalwood, that works so well with the profile it's wrapped around.
This MBombay had the familiar characteristics of a Habano mixed with the unique presence of sandalwood that worked nicely with a well balanced profile. The burn and draw stayed solid through the experience while finishing cool and creamy. The consistent profile worked well with this size vitola. I really enjoyed this stick and will gladly smoke it again.
Side note: This blend is offered in Robusto, Belicoso, Corona, Gorda and Churchill. I'm not sure id be interested in the Gorda or Churchill but I am really curious to experience this blend in the Corona and Belicoso presentations.
