  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

So does anyone here take two or more different pipe tobacco blends/brands and combine them to make a new blend? I'm starting to explore this and was curious if others have done this and had any success with it. If so, what combinations have y'all found work well together?

For example: I've taken Dunhill Nightcap and Dunhill Early Morning and combined the two together and will call it Dunhill Mid-Day. Not sure how it will pan out, but I'll know this afternoon when I get home. I've had the two tobaccos sitting together in the same jar for a few weeks now. I guess that's enough time for the two tobaccos to meld together.

Let me hear of your science experiments with tobacco.

Yup, all the time. I also have jars of individual "blending tobaccos" I use if I want to experiment. Like straight Latakia, straight perique, Virginia red, burley, Cavendish, etc.

I'm trying to remember the last time I smoked a commercial blend that I didn't tinker with at least a little...

This is a very common practice among long time pipe smokers. Another thing I and many others do, but you rarely hear about is layering. That's loading your pipe with two or more layers of different pipe tobaccos. I like loading a strong English on the bottom, the first tobacco in. Followed by a layer of a strong VaPer, the second tobacco in, and finally, the last layer (top layer) being a Burly Nut type blend.

I've heard it referred to a pipe tobacco parfait.

I must have missed something, This is the first I've heard of layering. I've heard of mixing two or more mixtures to form a third that was more to the pipers liking. But a parfait? This I have to try ! I've a meer with a massive bowl , I should be able to get some good flavor profiles. Thanks Johnny !!

Lostmason, the larger the bowl, the better layering works. I have found that layering more than 3 tobaccos does not work very well. Three works well, allowing 1/3 of the bowl for each blend.

I currently have only one lat blend,so I think I'll try it first with a VaPer on bottom and Burley on top. This sounds fun !
It's amazing what you can learn when you pay attention.

PS Black Coffee / PS Lux Bullseye Flake in a no name Polish billard.

First time trying the layering method, I could tell the difference in flavors but the transition was more subtle than I expected.

Try layering captain black with Balkan sobranie!
Have CB but not Balkan Sobranie,,,,What kind of mixture is it?

Yes, layering can be fun and interesting. Sometimes, using the same tobaccos, switching the layers, can improve your overall experience.
Next shot I'm going to try a VaPer on top over Germain's Plum Cake.
This is really more fun than just mixing them together.

That's interesting and done by many shops. The problem with that, is you end up with an unknown and it cannot be duplicated!
