  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

MonteCristo Reserva Negra..Smokes are out. Reviews coming.

As soon as these cigars are delivered and smoked, we'll have some reviews to post for you.

OK, I haven't done a review in a while, and am not going to start back all alone. What I mean Is that I need two guys who want to review this stick. I just got a 3 pack in the mail from Altadis. I got a Robusto, Toro, and a Torpedo. I want to smoke and review the Robusto, but I need 2 guys to each review one of the other two remaining sizes. I'll start a thread once all three of us have smoked, then we'll individualy post our reviews. I only ask that we have the cigar smoked with in a week from getting it.

So who are my huckleberries?

I got mine in the mail today. I'll set it on fire some time this week. I must say it is a very nice looking stick. I got the Torpedo.

Ok so today was a good day to sit out back & review the Montecristo Reserva Negra that Dave was kind enough to send me.
I had the torpedo. I seems to have a slight box pressed shape to it as well. This is a very nice looking stick with a beautiful dark wrapper.

A nice clean snip with my MTX. The pre-draw was extremely tight. I figured it may loosen up a little into the smoke.
Now for the light. Strong taste of leather right off the bat. Very smooth as well. The draw just won't loosen up so I had to run & grab my draw poker. After running my draw poker through it loosed up considerably & is smoking fantastic.
The first third the leather taste slowly grows stronger. I'm not getting much else in the way of flavor. The smoke is very light & airy. Towards the end of the first third I picked up a faint hint of fresh black pepper. The ash held on throughout the first part of the smoke.

The second third my ash dropped off. Wow now it loosened up even more. I'm starting to get into this cigar. The leather taste is much stronger & the pepper is gone. I am getting hints of coffee. The smoke is so smooth & creamy now. The hints of coffee got to be to much for me. I went & made a quick cup. Ahh, the perfect pairing!

The last third the cigar mellowed just slightly but kept the leather & coffee tastes. It stayed creamy until the final draw.

All in all this was a good stick. I'd have to say it was medium in both strength & body. A good Latin American breakfast blend coffee (black) helped round it out perfectly. I don't think this cigar will be working it's way into my daily rotation, but I would smoke it again. In comparison to any of the other stick in the nc Monti. line I'd say it has to be at the top of the list. I'd give it a 70/100.
Thanks again to Dave for sending me the stick & inviting me to be a part of this. This was the first group review I've been a part of. I enjoyed myself & hope to be able to do it again in the future.

Monitcristo Reserva Negra Review....

Wrapper-
well made without any real veins, nice oily sheen, and chocolate in color
Pre-light-
smooth yet a little firm draw, leathery taste with a hint of chocolate and nuts...seems as though the the chocolate may be a trend...
First toast-
creamy with a hint of pepper and a full flavour of nuts, also quickly began to detect hints of wood and more chocolate.....great taste so far and the draw is easing up......

1/3 The flavors are noticeable and consistant, so far a very good smoke...not to complex or overpowering...

Next 3rd Lots more pepper coming into the smoke and I can taste it on the back of my throat...still not overpowering but a little more complex, no new flavors introduced as of yet, just an increase in the spice...I think I like this cigar..

Finish pepper really intense, I have to say I like the spice and it's not the only flavour that is coming through... the chocolate is back!..the burn became a little off but a simple touch up with the torch and it was fine..

Conclusion- The Monticristo Reserva Negra

After smoking this cigar all the way down to the nub, I can tell you that I like this smoke. It starts of creamy and smooth and just when you think it just a mellow smoke...POW! the spice kicks in! Now as I said in my review its not overpowering spice but it is there and you can tatse it.. I am not sure where the chocolate flavor comes from but it is there, as well all throughout the cigar hints of sweetness offset by the pepper...the only drawback to this cigar was the...draw...it was a little tighter than I like but not so much as not to enjoy the smoke...with a excellent draw this would be a fantastic smoke.....it won't be my go to stick, however it's not a bad choice anyday....I will smoke another......
