In the past week, 5 police officers have been killed in the line of duty. Officer Richard Martin (Houston Police, May 18), Detctive Kerrie Orozco (Omaha Police, May 20), Patrolman James Bennett (Housing Authority of New Orleans, May 24), Police Cadet Taylor Thyfault (Colorado State Police, May 22) and a 49 year officer of the Rio Rancho Police Dept ( his name has not been identified yet) was executed on May 24. Today, Detctive Orozco's family will lay her to rest. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families today, as well as each day. That means 48 have paid the ultimate price this year alone, as well as nine K9 .

You will not see anything about these officers on television, nor will you hear about their sacrifices that were paid to protect the communities they worked and patrolled in. Each of these officers, left their families at home without knowing what their shifts may bring. They put themselves in harms way everyday. Although retired now after 25 years in LE, I'm grateful my family never had to endure the pains of grief these families must deal with now, as well as the lasting memories. My friend and former trainee, Steve, lost his father in the line of duty. I saw how that Impacted Steve over the course of his training period, as well as decisions he made during his continued career.

I am thankful to all the men and women who serve(d) in the military, as well as to the men and the women who serve(d) as law enforcement, fire and emergency services personnel.

We will ever forget the sacrifices made by any of these brave men and women, nor will we forget the sacrifices each of the families made.

My thoughts and prayers are with those families as well. I live in Albuquerque, about 10 miles from Rio Rancho, so that story is a pretty big one here. One of the worst parts is reading some of the comments on the news articles. Some people are just so incredibly ignorant and stupid it's ridiculous.

I know that this is not the place for a shameless radio station plug, but, seeing as it somewhat fits, one of my local radio stations has a DJ that is a complete and utter asshole... Funny, but still an asshole... Anyhow, he has a foundation that supports the fallen first responders. I don't have much to give, but I give to that foundation more than any other charitable organizations. Look him up, Russ Martin for the Russ Martin Listener foundation

Yes, a child's death is senseless. Cancer is taking more and more children everyday, I know Little Joey wanted to grow up to be a police officer. But, let's please keep this thread about the officers. I know some on here may know a few of the officers or their families. I'm hoping Flex or one of the fire dudes creates one about the fallen fire personnel.

No one does Rex. The media does not share that info. Only the bad, never the good or tragic. I personally know 4 that have paid that sacrifice. It's one reason it's hard for me to attend funerals.

Make it another one that died on Monday,
A veteran officer with the Mississippi Department of Corrections was killed in a crash Monday afternoon.

Sgt. Iris Smith died on impact when the MDOC van she was driving collided with the back of an 18-wheeler while she was escorting an inmate from Greene County Hospital to Forrest General Hospital shortly after 3 p.m., according to The Clarion-Ledger.

The 53-year-old corrections officer was in the van alone as another officer rode with the inmate in the ambulance on U.S. 49 in Hattiesburg.

Smith had been with the MDOC for almost 15 years and worked at South Mississippi Correctional Institution in Greene County. She had also worked at George County Community Work Center and had been commended for extra effort during her career.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Sgt. Smith's family," Corrections Commissioner Marshall Fisher said. "Her unexpected death shows how fragile life is. It's the kind of news we all dread hearing. She was driving from one destination to another as a certified peace officer to provide the secure custody and control of an inmate when her life was cut short."

The crash is currently under investigation by the Hattiesburg Police Department.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

I was in the Marine Corps and now have been a firefighter/paramedic for almost twenty years. I can tell you from personal experience that a lot of people these days say they care but their actions prove otherwise. My wife is a police officer and she would say the same thing. We live in Central Florida. My wife's agency the other night had an officer that told a drink guy to go back into he bar or pour his drink out. The drink opted on getting into a fight with the cop. The even scarier thing is that the crowd opted on attacking the officer. The fact of the matter is more and more people just really do not give three craps about public safety. It is becoming a sad country that we live in. My 2 cents.....sorrry if I offended anyone.

We lose a Firefighter or EMS personnel in the U.S. about every third day. Many thru cardiac emergencies. Older guys that are stressed out, out of shape and then asked to respond from a deep sleep and be dressed and into the cab of the engine or ambulance in less than a minute. Next comes "my 5 year old is not breathing" or "I'm stuck in my car and it's filling with water" "My toddler is up in that window with smoke pouring out of it" 3 examples I've all been a part of.
Next is trauma on scene. Our guys get hit by motor vehicles, fall off ladders, fall thru roofs, punched by citizens in our ambulances. (I've fallen off a two story balcony that collapsed and been punched in a ambulance)
Why do we do it? We love the job. But it takes a toll on all police, fire, ems and military personal. If you would like to view FF/Ems L.o.D.D. they can be viewed here.

Thanks Flex. I knew Brenda's dad died in the line of duty. I saw that photo when Brenda posted it. What a great way to honor him. And thanks Flex for being a hero. Proud you are my brother.

My dad was a cop for 33 years, my step brother was a cop for 30+ years. I'm just glad my daughter chose a different career path.

Thanks for your family's service brother. You are right, most people could careless about emergency responders, until they need them, whether it's a crime, accident, rescue or medical emergency. Without these folks doing their jobs, I'm scare at what our communities would look like.

Thanks for sharing Bill. I just don't understand the attitude that many people are showing today... the utter lack of respect and care for those that serve our country in one way or another. Yes there are bad apples out there, but that is every profession. The great majority of our public service people don't deserve what is happening today, it's sickening. I think one of the major problems is the media just waiting to hear about anything that happens and then tries to build it up, inciting the idiots out there. It's a shame.

@jolietilfire, that's a great, emotional picture... i've never seen that before. Gavin will love that when he's old enough to understand it.

Thanks for the reminder. These are sobering reminders of what exactly we all take for granted. Thanks to all that serve in one way or another.

@Angry Bill Thank you for this thread... I am recently retired from 25yrs in L.E. myself. I have felt the pain of losing fellow officers during my career and my prayers still go out to their families. The fact that the media nearly always ignores these heroes is a crying shame. It's nice to see when people like you bring their sacrifices to light. Stay safe brother.
