Movie: Uncle Buck
Gar': opus X Angels Share (with thanks to Chefy)
Today, you get the pleasure of reading my take on the Fuente Opus X Angel's Share and the joy of my commentary on Uncle Buck! Love it or hate it, it's now on the webs FOREVER....no take backs..so grab a cigar and join me.
Wow the tension between the mother and daughter in the beginning is so wonderful to experience...lol yes I'm a horrible person.
The Wrapper on the Angel's Share has such a uniform color and presentation...with just a peak of tooth strewn about.
Damn, it is worth saying again, the daughter is ruthless and the tension feels so real. Culkin was such a great child actor....too bad life took a weird turn for him. RIP John Candy... I love him as an actor.. God...Buck, a man's man. And he's smoking a Gar'!
Opus is growing on me, I have to say. The burn wonked at first but corrected promptly. The blend is so balanced it creates a singular flavor and is hard to discern anything other than Opus...it's almost like eating a blueberry pie, mixed with a bit of gingerbread and spice...
"Hey, I stopped smoking cigarettes! I'm on to cigars now, yeah I'm onto a five year plan. I eliminated the cigarettes,Went to cigars, then I go to pipes, then I go to chewing tobacco and then onto that nicotine gum." This is why I love Uncle Buck! I kinda followed the same plan.
This burn went rogue again. I'm gonna let it run free.. The flavors are rich.. yet light, airy and refined at the same time. One thing I dislike is how much glue they put on the band...come on Arturo... And there's two bands. I now have some lovely tears to go with the free riding burn line. The blend stays consistent into the half way mark. Spicy and smooth at the same time. I'm trying to smoke it slowly but it keeps wanting to go out...really takes away from the freedom of an uninhibited experience.
There are so many great things I love about John Candy's character and a lot of it is just because he is playing the part. (I just got a puff of delicious plum and the smoke smells like candy) the "20 questions" scene with Culkin and John Candy is just good old fashioned comedy...no shock, no bells and whistles...pure.
I think I relate with Buck a lot...lol and I like that. "You think it's the hat? A lot of people hate the hat, the sight of it just angers them. I'll tell ya a story about it on the way to school."
I had to fix the burn...it was getting nowhere fast and needed a little torch love. The smoke is clean, there are only soft, pleasant notes left behind. Wood, a touch of leather, cooked berries...and a perfect amount of spice on the tongue and through the retro.
Buck is such a smooth talker...lol Well he thinks he is. Lmao he is sitting on the couch eating frosted flakes from the box and sucks the fallen crumbs off his shirt with a vacuum hose....excellent. The lunch he packs for the little boy says it all...but he is trying...give the boy Sardines? Lol. There are just too many great things in this movie to note them all.
It's worth repeating...Opus is growing on me the more I smoke them but there are some major concerns I have that will probably keep me at the present distance I am with them; eg: everyone I've had has burned uneven and needed touch ups. Also the band issue always ripping the wrapper is a huge no no. The price point and availability ice the cake.
Mother: "Have you been giving the dog water?" Buck: "I've been leaving the toilet seat up. Oh is that what that blue stuff is, so it's not good for him huh, ok."
The Opus does offer a blend that stands by itself among NC's. There are a lot of blends from different makers that have a lot of similarities but Opus, I haven't had another that resembles it in the least.
The spice is picking up as I approach the final third but the flavor profile stands strong. The strength on the Angel's Share is at the low end of medium.
I love that Jacky from Rossanne plays the eccentric neighbor. She walks in as Buck is talking dirty to the broken washing machine...lol.
"How would you like to spend the next several nights wondering if your crazy, out of work, bum Uncle....will shave your head while you sleep"..cue creepy music and buzzer noise..."see you in the car."
The cooked berries taste is so pleasant...mingling with a richness and bold spice. The wood and leather work very well in chorus with the rest of the profile.
Yes! Buck's smoking a Lance! Exit scene to him flipping pancakes with a shovel! Hahaha...I love this movie, it never gets old and all age groups can enjoy it...nothing like clean humor mixed with subtle adult undertones.
The daughter is a bitch but she plays her part so well. They all do...
The smoke stays pretty cool down to the nub. The flavors stay clean but the cooked berries are overpowered by the ramped up spice, turning it into more of a background sweetness.
Here is one of my favorite parts. Enter Buck: goes into the school...smoking a cigar...realizes it and goes into the little boys bathroom to put it out...then proceeds to try and take a piss in the kiddie urinals down on one knee...hahaha. It doesn't end there.. The whole conference with the assistant principle is priceless. My favorite quote of the whole movie..."Here's a quarter, go down town and find a rat to gnaw that thing off your face! Good day to you madam."
This cigar is definitely nub worthy. In spite of it's flaws, it is also box worthy. I subject it to such scrutiny as I'm sure a lot of others do as well, because of it's price point and rarity; the high regard in which it is held by the cigar community. I've only had several of them (I believe somewhere around 7-10) I've experienced burn issues with each and everyone of them. I've smoked slow, medium, fast.. Doesn't matter. I've had them from my humidor and others. That shouldn't happen with this caliber of cigar...you are paying for perfection and that is what should be delivered. I know this is my opinion and possibly mine alone.. But when I go into my B&M, purchase a cigar for 20-30-40 dollars... I expect it to smoke perfectly.. (Bar a few scarce instances that are inevitable) I expect that when I reach the band and need to take it off to continue further, that I don't rip the wrapper and damage the cigar.. Especially when there are two bands and they reach almost the middle of the stick. Really, I expect excellence out of any cigar above ten dollars. I expect to get an exceptional cigar each and every time. This is where most of my issue comes into play when speaking of Opus.. On the brighter side, the tobacco is of the highest quality and does offer a flavor experience unique to any other cigar on the market. It is enjoyable to smoke and for the most part not a hassle at all. The draw is excellent every time and the smoke stays cool down to the nub. I say if you have the money to enjoy boxes of them, they are worth it because the hit on your pocket book isn't as much a consideration or if the flaws I take up with them, are not a bother to you, I say buy a box of them.. Even if you can't afford a box, a single is still an excellent celebratory smoke and worth a purchase. I am just being me...the scrutinizer...I always shoot it straight but also keep an open mind and am completely willing to change my opinion at any given time due to new outlooks or information. I do this so you can get another brothers honest opinion on a stick that you might like to try or, might have already tried and are just reading to see what everyone else thinks. So there you have it... Opus Angel's share.. It's an excellent smoke that you will find enjoyment out of..the profile is lovely and extremely consistent. And despite the issues I have with it, I love the blend and what it has to offer. Take my experience with a grain of salt and try one for yourself, there's no adventure more fulfilling than one personally experienced. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Back to Uncle Buck... Buck, Buck, Buck.. Going through life one misfortune at a time, making due with whatcha got. The comedy is genius and John Candy is the Devine hand that delivers it oh so well. I'm an 80's early 90's movie whore. I enjoy them all over the board but classics are classics. I love the footprint some movies leave behind and the memories they hold in them.
Buck's got a stogie in his mouth the whole time, wonder what it is...
It gets a little cheesy towards the end but only for a moment, and then it redeems itself shortly after. It's like a degenerate's family movie....fits me like an old shoe.
Exit Uncle Buck riding off into the sunset in his beat up 1975 Mercury Marquis Brougham...
