  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

Nice can't wait to hear how its is. With a few guys here brewing we may have to have a home brew swap in the future.

Good job brother. It's going to be delicious. Just be patient!!! The longer you wait the better it will be. I say at least 2 months.

Are you going to transfer it to another bucket/carboy after fermentation in about a week?

nice.. haven't done a batch in a while. I knocked out a porter that was awesome a couple of years ago. We've got a nice brewmaster store here in town.

I am still playing with cider stuff currently but eventually I'll do a beer and maybe some wine.

It's a cool thing to do as a sort of hobby I think. You can save some serious cash on booze by making it yourself. Plus you can customize the recipes to fit your specific tastes.

It's an optional step. Most home brew kits don't come with clarifiers and the beer comes out REALLY dark. It doesn't effect the flavor too much... just the appearance and amount of "trub" that can make it in the bottles.

They call it secondary fermentation but the name doesn't really fit because fermentation it done. I have the 2 buckets than came with the kit and then a 6 gallon glass carboy that I transfer to for secondary fermentation about 7-10 days after brewing (whenever the final gravity has reached the determined point). Besides cleaning up your beer, this opens up your primary bucket to start another batch!

No biggie. Your beer will still be delicious. I would just think about gettin a carboy if you continue brewing. Remember... PATIENCE

have fun

The total volume of your beer should be 5 gallons. Your bucket should be 7 gallons I think. That's another reason you transfer to a 6 gallon carboy. After fermentation you don't want anymore oxygen so transferring to a smaller container with less head room for oxygen makes for better beet.

You transfer between the two just like you will between your primary bucket and bottling bucket. You use an auto-siphon with a plastic tube attached that have been sanitized for at least 30 minutes. If you didn't get one with your kit... you will need one. It will come with instructions

Does it still look like it's fermenting? Lots of bubbles at the surface/ a krausen or head on the fermentation. If your air lock is still happily bubbling away wait off on transferring to a secondary for another week. Normally you give two weeks in primary depending on the yeast.

I'd go ahaed and transfer it to the carboy. This way you get the beer off the trub and reduce your chance of geeting off flavors. If you can wait let the beer sit in the secondary for at least two weeks It can go longer but since this is your first batch I know its hard to wait!. Don't forget to cover the carboy with something to prevent light from skunking the beer.
