  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

My choice of lighter

I use a flip top zippo lighter to light my cigars, and apparently, according to some employees at a smoke shop, this is a incorrect way to light a cigar. However; my trusty zippo has never lead me wrong. Is it unacceptable to use a zippo?

I don't like using a Zippo I think they make my cigars taste funny But if you use one and have no problems with it who cares what others think?

um well most people won't use Zippo's due to getting the flavor of the fluid in the cigar. I for one only used one once and that was enough and I went to matches or a torch. I read that there is new fluid that does not have the taste but I won't go back and try. Just my opinion.

Yep, like the other guys said, if you don't mind smoking a cigar that tastes like lighter fluid then I guess its no big deal.

I never really noticed a taste of lighter fluid, however if this is the predominating opinion, maybe I need to go pick up a torch.
If you are used to a soft flame, you could just pic up a bic type lighter/

I'll use a bic if it's all that there is. I however prefer my torch or a wooden match.

I have a refillable soft flame that is super reliable. Had a few higher end torches and got tired of them not working. I wouldn't use a zippo personally but no biggie if you do...

Know what I find funny about the Zippo question that always pops up. It seems that the most reliable pipe lighter is made by zippo. None of the others last as long or work as well. I can't say that I've tasted fuel when lighting with a zippo in the past. I'll give it a shot and see if its still a valid claim.

Okay people always say that zippos will make your cigars taste bad. I have never tried lighting a cigar with a zippo cause I do not have one that works but I have used a Bic before and not taste difference. Doesn't it make a difference if you draw while you have the flame to the foot. If you are just touching the flame to the foot then how would it make it taste bad?

Maybe we are getting mixed messages. It could all depend on how you light it and not the heat source.

My advice is buy a box of wooden matches or a butane torch. You can usually get free matches at most b&m's. Most shops also have decent cheap torch lighters. I know CI has them once in awhile for two for ten.

The best torch lighter I've got came from Thompson's back in 2001, and I've still got it. Granted I don't use it daily but when I need it, I can always count on it.

I actually thought about getting that torch insert, I just like the Zippo, and I also use a bic from time to time, since my zippo is quite thirsty for the fluid
