  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over the next few weekends BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

My choice of lighter

The best lighter I have used is the S.T. Dupont Xtend, works wonders. 100% wind resistant, and great size for the pocket.

Its not good to use Zippos as the lighter fluid leaves residue on your cigar, thus altering the taste. I prefer an open flame like you though and I have found safe haven in some of the nicer double flame, gas powered, flint lighters. Just a thought.

Ronson Jet Light. Available at Wally World for less than $3. Refillable. I have at least 10 lighters that I've bought from different cigar sites. None work better than the Ronson.

How about a Ronson Jetlite $3 at wal-mart or unless you are anti-walmart then $5 at CVS

Here's a 3rd vote for the Ronson.

I've got a couple of nice Colibri's, a couple of very nice Zippo's, but the Ronson has a permanent place in my travel humi and in my pocket.

I have a Dupont but I think I'm going to Wally World today and to see if I can pick up 4 or 5 of the Ronson Jetlites. Need 1 for the golf bag. One for my locker at the leaf. A couple for here nor there on here!

I prefer a soft flame, but I don't have a soft flame zippo to try out, so I don't know if you will get any of that lighter fluid taste. I'd imagine that it's the same idea as butane - if you get a high quality fuel with fewer impurities, you'll get a cleaner light (as opposed to using one of those stick lighters or something).

There's always a time and place for each - I love matches, but they're hard to use with any kind of wind/larger gauges. Then a soft flame lighter just doesn't cut it sometimes. And then you just have to resort to a butane torch. If I could, I'd keep all three on hand to use what I want when I want, but I usually only have any 1 or 2 on me at a given time.

I never really noticed a taste of lighter fluid, however if this is the predominating opinion, maybe I need to go pick up a torch.
Don't be deterred. Use your Zippo, fill it with Zippo brand lighter fluid, and let the flame burn for about a second before holding it near your cigar. You will never detect any change in the cigar's flavor. A bunch of friends of mine and I all tried it and all came to the same conclusion: no problem. :cbig:

A Zippo is definitely a must-have for any smoker, its stylish, classy and effective, and if your looking for a present for a smoker this Christmas, why not get them a Zippo. Believe me they will thank you for it.

AND, if they don't like the classic lighter fluid system, they can always replace the workings with a torch butane (Z-plus) or soft butane (Vector) flame.
