Larry bombed me with some cigars a few days ago and the El Picador was among them. Had to take some packages to the post office this afternoon so I loaded up the little guy...
...and last minute decided to grab a smoke. The El Picador was on top and seemed the right size so off I went.
Taking the El Picador from the cellophane I'm greeted with the classic DPG aroma which has always reminded me of peanut butter. I love, love, love that aroma . Clipped about 1/4" off the cap and the draw was great, toasted the foot and we were rolling.
Right away there is a nice woody leather flavor. The pepper blast I was expecting was not there, instead the pepper started off as a faint tickle and ramped up in intensity toward the back of my tongue. Ash was white, tight, and held strong despite the breeze and activity of walking. Smoke output would best be described as copious. The ash held until the end of the 1/3 when it fell to the pavement.
In the 2/3 the ash fell the pepper began dying down and it transitioned from a wood/leather flavor to a very nice slightly sweet tobacco profile. The draw also began to tighten from this point forth (something I've not had happen before), but never felt like it was a problem. I reached the post office sooner than I had expected and obviously couldn't take it in with me :hanghead: so I cut it off just above the ash and purged as best I could. Once my packages were on the way I stepped back outside and toasted back up. I had a little trouble getting it lit again, but that was due mostly to my natural flame lighter and the breeze.
The pepper had died way down in the 3/3 and a slight chocolatey flavor was added to the tobacco flavor. Some leather returned in the final few puffs. The draw remained tighter than when I had started, but was not problematic.
This cigar was G, double O, D...GOOD. They're extremely limited though, so if you want to try some (and if you like DPG why wouldn't you :dunno
I'd contact Empire Cigars or drop Larry a line right away!
