  • BOTL UPCOMING MAINTENANCE

Hi Everyone, as mentioned in my introduction post, BOTL needs quite a bit of updating, patching and whatever else I might come across. Over time BOTL may be unreachable on occasion as I do migrations or updates, etc. Just be patient - we'll be back! I'll generally try to keep these maintenances until later in the evenings.

At this years herf we were all relaxing at Tubamans casa. All of a sudden WHAM! I get smacked with my favorite Pepin stick, in fact one that to this day I still think is underrated/under the radar, even for the hefty price it demanded. Jerome found me sitting there drinking some George T. Stagg and handed me the My Father Le 2010 with coffin in tow. I thanked him and let him know it would be burned in the near future when the time was right. Well that right time is right now.

Drink: Diplomatico Venezuelan rum
Time: 645pm
Slight rain with 70 deg temp
Finished:852pm
Taking the MF LE out of its cello and coffin I'm greeted with one of my favorite cold aromas. Fermented tobacco with spice and mint. Man I love when Pepins sticks smell like this after some down time. Only thing is these sticks have developed this character much faster then most others in his lineage. El Centurions, Pepin Blues take a few more years IMO to achieve that mint/spice fermented character.
Cutting with my Palio cutter I'm greeted with spice on the lips and a oakyness along with that mint. Man I can't wait to light this bad boy it's been to long since I've had one! Perfect construction btw. (no kidding the masters made this cigar lol) In fact I've never had one yet that lets me down in this department.

Lit and away we go. Right away a BLAST of pepper on the throat and back of the tongue. Some Oak notes coming thru as well.
First third:
Spice and rich tobacco; very well aged tobacco at that. No draw or burn issues. End of first third the spice fades in typical Pepin fashion. Some light leather creeps in and here comes that ambient room aroma. I'll say every time I ever smelled someone smoking one of these that room aroma comes right back. ONE OF the best smelling cigars around IMO. Also now I've began to retrohale this cigar and just got a bit of dried fruit thru the sinus.

2nd:
Grayish/Black ash has been holding on a inch at a time. This cigar is always tricky IMO. It makes you go back and forth. Was it this I tasted or that? So complex and so refined! But also still med-full bodied. Finish is holding on as long as every puff. Continuing on the 2nd third more heavy leather is creeping in. Also a very slight sweetness in the back round developing. At this point the spice is all gone. I'm also trying to catch whiffs of smoke as they wisp around me because it just smells so damn good:)

Final 3rd:
At this point heavy heavy leather. So thick but so smooth. Also some burnt tobacco notes as well. Spice creeping back in but no sweetness. Burn has been good, even with the rain and high dew points. Ash holds for a steady inch or so and falls into the stinky. I've always liked the end of this cigar. Full bodied but still smooth. No heat in the last couple of inches just tons of cool smoke. The mint has also creped back in the last inch of the cigar.

What else can I say. I just love this cigar and it will always make me smile. Crafted by two of the masters in the industry at a table I was fortunate enough to sit at! Great flavors all around, complex, tons of smoke and one of the best ambient aromas a cigar has ever had. A pleasure to smoke and review. Just like Folgers good to the last drop! Finish time @ 2hrs.

Thanks to Jerome for such a thoughtful gift. It was a pleasure to smoke and review on my 3rd anniversary here at BOTL!

Great review Justin. I picked up a few of these when they were released and they didnt last very long, I wish I had held onto a few because I knew some down time would make these even better!

Nice review, and I agree totally with it. A couple weeks ago a friend from KC was in town and had mentioned that his local B&M didn't carry any Cabaiguan Guapos Maduro Juniors, so I gave him 6 out of what I had left in a box, and was suprised with the My Father LE as a thank you before he went back to KC. I love the MF#1, but found the LE an incredible experience as it sounds you have.

Justin--Great review! I never had one last year, but read a lot of negative reviews (and a few positives too). I smoked my first (and only) this Father's Day and LOVED that cigar! None of the overpowering characteristics that people had talked about last year, so I guess it mellowed. Lots of wonderful Pelo d' Oro spice, great flavors. Definitely reminiscent of hte My Father, but definitely better and more complex. I wished I'd gotten some of these when they came out, they were just do dang 'spensive!

And i love the yard and patio, man, gorgeous.
